Xiaomi just launched its Mi Play on 24 December in the mid-range smartphone segment. The Xiaomi Mi Play comes packed with a water-drop notch, a dual rear camera system and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It’s also the first phone to have an Helio P35 processor. Xiaomi also offers 10GB of free monthly data for a year along with the handset.
So how will this new Xiaomi Mi Play is an excellent addition of Xiaomi Mi Play or not? Can it compete against other prominent competitors in the price range? We decided to conduct a comparison of the latest Xiaomi phone to other two notable handsets in the price range which are the Honor 9N and Nokia 6.1 Plus or also known as Nokia X6 in the Chinese market. Let’s see which phone is better among the three.

Xiaomi Mi Play
Let’s start the comparison with their specifications. All of these three handsets have support for dual-SIM cards and run Android 8.0 or Android 8.1 Oreo. While the Honor 9N and Xiaomi Mi Play both run a custom UI, the Nokia 6.1 Plus runs a stock Android as it is a part of the Google’s Android One program. While Honor and Xiaomi handsets both come packed with a 5.84-inch display while the Nokia device’s display is just a little bit smaller at 5.8 inches in size.
All of those displays have a resolution of 2,280 x 1,080 pixels resolution, 432 PPI pixel density and an aspect ratio of 19:9. While the Nokia and Honor phones have wider notches on their displays, the one on the Xiaomi Mi Play is in a water-drop shape.
While the Honor 9N is packed with a Huawei’s Kirin 659 SoC and the Nokia 6.1 Plus is powered by a Snapdragon 636 processor, the Xiaomi Mi Play is the first phone to come with an Helio P35 SoC.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus only comes in a single memory variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. However, HMD Global did offer the Chinese version of the Nokia 6.1 Plus called Nokia X6 in three variants so hopefully, there will be more options of the Nokia 6.1 Plus in India. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi Mi Play is offered in three variants, one of which is 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant and the other two models have 6GB RAM/64GB storage and 6GB RAM/128GB storage.

Honor also provides three options of the Honor 9N, including a 3GB of RAM/32GB storage variant, a 4GB of RAM/64GB storage option and a top-end model with 4GB of RAM/128GB storage.

In terms of camera, all of these handsets feature a dual camera system stacked vertically on the rear. There are a 12MP main sensor with an aperture of f/2.2, a 2MP secondary sensor and an LED flash as well. On the front, it has an 8MP sensor for taking selfies.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus has a 16MP main sensor with an aperture of f2.0 and 1.4µm pixels along with a 5MP secondary sensor with an aperture of f2.4 and 1.12µm pixels. There is also a dual-tone flash module on the rear. The Nokia handset also has a 16MP selfie camera with an f2.0 aperture and 1µm pixels.
There is a dual camera setup in the Honor 9N, comprising of a 13MP main sensor, a 2MP secondary depth sensor, and an LED flash. Its camera setup also has PDAF and support for features such as burst mode, time-lapse and HDR. The phone also has a 16MP selfie camera with a beauty mode. Both of the front and rear cameras have support for 1080p video recording.
In the battery aspect, the Nokia 6.1 is slightly ahead with a 3,060 mAh battery, while the Honor 9N and the Xiaomi Mi Play both only have a 3,000 mAh battery. All of the handsets here come with rear-mounted fingerprint scanners and expandable storage of up to 256GB Via microSD slot. In terms of dimensions and weight, the Honor 9N is the thinnest phone with 7.70mm and have a pretty much the same weight with the other two at 152 grams.

Xiaomi Mi Play vs Nokia 6.1 Plus vs Honor 9N: Price
The Xiaomi Mi Play is priced at 1,099 CNY (around Rs. 11,100) in the Chinese market for the base variant with 4GB of RAM/64GB of storage. After its launch, Xiaomi also released two more options of the Mi Play with 6GB RAM/64GB storage for 1,299 CNY (around Rs. 13,200) and 6GB RAM/128GB storage for 1,599 CNY (around Rs. 16,300). There are a total of four color options of the Mi Play, including Twilight Gold, Black, Dream Blue, and a gradient finish. Consumers can purchase the phone from 10 am CST on 25 December. There is still no information confirming the international release date of the handset.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus was released in the Chinese market in May under the name of Nokia X6 and its base variant with 4GB of RAM/32GB of storage is priced at 1,299 CNY (around Rs. 13,200) while the top-end variant with 6GB of RAM/64GB of storage is offered at a price of 1,699 CNY (around Rs. 18,100). In the Indian market, HMD Global only offers a single variant of the phone with 4GB of RAM/64GB of storage at a price of Rs. 15,999.
The Honor 9N was released in the Indian market in July. Its base variant with 3GB of RAM/32GB of storage is priced at Rs. 11,999 while the higher option with 4GB of RAM/64GB of storage costs Rs. 13,999 and the 4GB of RAM/128GB of storage top-end option is offered at a price of Rs. 17,999. The phone comes in Sapphire Blue, Midnight Black, Lavender Purple and Robin Egg Blue color options and it is available via HiHonor Store and Flipkart.
