The $1,999 iPhone Duo Still Carries Foldables' Oldest Flaw

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, its first folding phone. The device starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage and opens from a 5.4-inch outer screen into a 7.6-inch inner display. It uses the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, adds a titanium body, and carries an IP68 rating. Pre-orders begin October 16, with sales starting October 23.

A crease that never fully disappeared

Leaks suggested Apple had solved the visible crease that has marked every foldable since the first Galaxy Fold. Hands-on photos and event footage tell a more familiar story. The crease is harder to see head-on thanks to a matte nano-texture finish, a polymer cover that Apple says is 40 percent stiffer than typical industry material, and a titanium plate under the display. It is still visible at certain angles and in some lighting. Physics has not changed. Repeated bending concentrates stress along the hinge. Over months of daily use, that line tends to become more obvious.

The film that suppliers worry about

The larger concern is not only how the crease looks on day one. Foldable screens use stacked layers: a protective film, flexible glass, optical adhesive, OLED, and a metal support plate. Suppliers have told reporters they are not convinced Apple's multilayer design will stop the top film from peeling along the crease after prolonged use. If the film lifts, it could hurt display quality and later Apple Pencil input, which Apple says will arrive later this year. Apple has not published a fold-cycle rating, a number rival makers usually share.

Price meets unproven wear

At $1,999, and up to $3,199 for 2TB, the Duo costs more than two standard iPhones. Apple has not listed out-of-warranty screen or hinge repair prices. AppleCare+ is available, but the bill for a first-generation folding panel remains unknown. The phone is also heavier than any previous iPhone at 254 grams, and it drops Face ID in favor of a side-button Touch ID sensor.

The Duo is Apple's most ambitious iPhone redesign in years. It is also a first-generation foldable. Early impressions look polished. Long-term durability is the part buyers cannot check until the device lives in pockets and bags.
