2018 has been a year of smartphones as we had been witnessed a lot of phones being released under many price ranges with many different features and specs. The Rs. 10,000 - Rs. 20,000 is the busiest price segment as it is packed with smartphones at almost every price point. The popular Xiaomi Redmi Note lineup had faced quite tough challenges from the likes of Vivo, Asus, and Realme. In this comparison, we would like to compare the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro with the Vivo Y89 and the Realme 2 Pro to see which phone is the best out of the three.
Vivo Y89 is only available in China for now
Redmi Note 6 Pro vs. Realme 2 Pro vs. Vivo Y89: Price
The Realme 2 Pro, which was launched on October last year, comes in a total of three options, including an option with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage priced at Rs. 13,990, a higher model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage priced at Rs. 15,990. The last variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage is priced at Rs. 17,990.
The Redmi Note 6 Pro
The Redmi Note 6 Pro came in the Indian market in November last year for Rs. 13,999 for the option with 4GB of RAM, while the variant with 6GB of RAM is priced at Rs, 15,999. On the other hand, the Vivo Y89 was just released in the Chinese market for RMB 1,598 (around Rs. 16,500). However, it is currently being offered at a special price tag of RMB 1,396 (approx. Rs. 14,000). Given the Vivo’s existing smartphone portfolio in the Indian market and the specifications of the Vivo Y89, we believe its price should fall in the Rs. 15,000 segment. This may be a challenge for Vivo to sell the Vivo Y89 due to the massive amount of choices being offered in the market in the price range.
Redmi Note 6 Pro vs. Realme 2 Pro vs. Vivo Y89: Display & Design
The Redmi Note 6 Pro features a sturdy all-metal body as well as a matte finish on the back. Its design is not flashy by any mean but the handset still feels very solid to operate and hold on hand as well. On the other hand, the Vivo Y89 comes with a typical design of Vivo which is a plastic body with a glossy back and gradient color variants as well. The design is still quite attractive to some consumers but it is not really as stylish or elegant as the Realme 2 Pro. The Realme phone has the best design out of the three, and it is not really exaggerating to say that the handset nearly redefines the design of the budget smartphone with its premium feeling build and stunning glass finish at the back.
Not just on the back, the Realme 2 Pro also has a stunning design on the front with its almost bezel-less design with a tiny dewdrop notch on its 6.3-inch Full-HD+ LCD display. Meanwhile, both of the Redmi Note 6 Pro and Vivo Y89 sports the same 6.26-inch Full-HD+ LCD display. However, even though both of the phones feature a notch on their displays, the Redmi Note 6 features a wider notch compared to the one on the Vivo Y89 due to the phone sporting a dual selfie camera on the front.
Redmi Note 6 Pro vs. Realme 2 Pro vs. Vivo Y89: Specifications & Software
When it comes to the specifications, the Vivo Y89 can’t compete with the other two phones in this comparison. Vivo only offers the handset in a single variant with 4GB of RAM and 32GB storage which is expandable via a microSD card slot. It is powered by a Snapdragon 626 SoC, coupled with an Adreno 506 GPU.
On the other hand, the Note 6 Pro, which received a lot of criticisms for being an unworthy upgrade over its predecessor, the Redmi Note 5 Pro as it still packs the same Snapdragon 636 SoC as on the Redmi Note 5. Xiaomi offers the handset in two options with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The phone has a hybrid card slot, and that means it will have one slot for either a second SIM card slot or a microSD card slot.
Lastly, the Realme 2 Pro comes packed with decent specifications considering its price tag. It is powered by the most powerful SoC out of the three, the Snapdragon 660 SoC. As mentioned, it is offered in a total of three options, including an option with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, a higher model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and the top-end variant with 8GB RAM and 128Gb of storage.
All three smartphones run their respectively custom UIs that are all based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The MIUI developed by Xiaomi should be the most popular custom UI out of the three, but both the Realme’s ColorOS and Vivo’s Funtouch OS also offers some nice features as well.
Redmi Note 6 Pro vs. Realme 2 Pro vs. Vivo Y89: Camera & Battery Life
Redmi Note 6 Pro's front camera setup
All three handsets come with a dual rear camera system. Both of the Realme 2 Pro and Vivo Y89 sport a 16MP main sensor and a 2MP secondary sensor for depth sensing. However, while the camera on the Realme 2 Pro is better on paper as it comes with a larger aperture of f/1.7 on the main camera while it is an aperture of f/2.0 on the Vivo Y89. On the other hand, the Redmi 6 Pro sports a 16MP main sensor with an aperture of f/1.9 and a large 1.4μ pixels; and it is paired with a 5MP secondary depth sensor.
Realme 2 Pro
On the front, while the Realme 2 Pro and Vivo Y89 sports the same 16MP camera with an aperture of f/2.0, the Redmi Note 6 Pro wins in this aspect with a dual selfie camera setup, comprising of 20MP and 2MP sensors. However, the Realme 2 Pro is the only smartphone that is capable of recording 4K videos.
In the battery department, the Redmi 6 Pro is still the winner as it comes with a decent 4,000 mAh battery that is enough to power the phone for a day or more. The Vivo Y89 has the worst battery with a capacity of 3,260 mAh, while the Realme 2 Pro is slightly better with a 3,500 mAh battery. Unfortunately, none of these smartphones come with a USB-C port as well as fast charging tech.
Redmi Note 6 Pro vs. Realme 2 Pro vs. Vivo Y89: Final thoughts
The Vivo Y89 seems to be quite lackluster when you take into consideration the intense competition in its price range. Vivo may still be able to get a decent sale for the Vivo Y89 due to its offline channels, and other budget phone brands stick to online channels only.
The Redmi Note 6 Pro is still a decent choice and an all-rounder that offer not only good specifications and performance but also great cameras and battery life as well. Another thing that makes the Redmi Note 6 Pro is a great choice is its competitive price. But it doesn’t mean that the Realme 2 Pro falls behind in the competition. The phone also offers quite a lot of value for its price tag, from the best performance, a decent camera system, stunning design and also great battery capacity as well.
