Smartphone firms are having their eyes on India as a potential country that may bring them considerable growth. While the Chinese companies do have their local arena at hand, those like Apple think that the Indian market is full of potential.

The reason behind this is the fact that the Indian are all going online, which stems from the growing smartphone penetration.
A study revealed that the number of people who use smartphones has increased continuously in the last 10 years and this figure is projected to keep on rising. 4 years ago, in India, there were over 199 million smartphone users, making up 26.3% of the total number of mobile users.
This figure was projected to increase by 100 million in the year 2017 and reached 340 million in 2018. This year, we have reasons to believe that this number will hit 374 million, accounting for 39% of mobile users. 3 years from now, it is estimated to reach 442 million.
In the last few months of 2018, Counterpoint published a report saying that last year, there were 150 million smartphones were exported to India and this year, this figure was expected to rise to a minimum of 160 million.

When you compare that number to India’s population of about 1.3 billion, it does not sound too impressive at all. However, if you weigh that 374 million against the world’s smartphone user number, which is around 2.7 billion, ours makes up 13.8% while only a year ago, this number was 12%.
This position used to belong to the US. However, the arrival of several budget-friendly brands from China has been the game changer for India. Although half of the Chinese population is projected to have smartphones when the year 2019 ends, and China is the most crowded country in the world, India was close behind when it comes to the number of smartphone users.
While things are getting brighter for smartphone companies in India, no one can say the same thing about the US and Chinese market. The day an Indian number of smartphone users ranks the first place may not be too far away.
