OnePlus 6T vs. OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition: What Are Their Differences?

OnePlus has been partnering with renowned brands to release a couple of special edition for its smartphones. While the Chinese smartphone maker had already partnered with Avengers of Marvel and famous franchise Star Wars in the past, in 2018, the company has been in partnership with McLaren - a British automotive manufacturer to make a special edition for the OnePlus 6T.

The new edition is called OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, and its design is inspired by the design of McLaren’s Formula 1 car. This handset was introduced on 11 December, and it was released in the Indian market yesterday. OnePlus will start selling the limited edition handset at its Experience Store in New Delhi and will be available for purchasing online from Amazon.in and OnePlus Store from 15 December. Similar to the regular model, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition also sports a 6.41-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED panel with 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution and a water-drop notch. It also has an in-screen fingerprint scanner, which is the top selling point for both handsets.

Both the regular and McLaren models feature a Snapdragon 845 chipset along with Adreno 630 GPU. The regular OnePlus 6T comes in three different variants: 6GB of RAM/128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of storage. Meanwhile, there is only one McLaren Edition variant with 10GB RAM/256GB of storage.

The McLaren Edition smartphone is the first one having 10GB RAM, and the extra RAM would make the handset’s performance even snappier. Both regular and limited models are packed with a 3,700 mAh battery, but they have different charging systems. While the standard model only has 20W fast charging, the McLaren Edition model is equipped with 30W Warp Charging technology, which allows the device to charge at 30W. OnePlus claims that the Warp Charging technology can enable the phone to go from 0 to 50 percent of battery in just 20 minutes. Both standard and special models come with Oxygen OS 9.0.5 which is based on the latest Android 9 Pie.

The design is the most significant difference between the two handsets. The McLaren edition and standard OnePlus 6T both have a metal casing with glass back, but the limited edition also comes with a signature Papaya Orange color of the McLaren finish on the glass back’s edge. It also has elements of carbon fiber finish.

This finish is called Speed Orange, which justifies what OnePlus is trying to do with this edition. The standard OnePlus 6T comes in three colors which are Midnight Black, Mirror Black and also Thunder Purple. The McLaren Edition is mostly targeted at McLaren who want to collect exquisite things of the McLaren or people who just want to have a unique touch of look and feel.

In the camera department, both variants have the same camera setup. There is a 16MP f1.7 primary sensor with optical image stabilisation and phase detection autofocus, along with a 20MP secondary depth sensor. On the front, there is a 16MP f2.0 front-facing camera with support for 1080p video recording and auto-HDR.

The OnePlus 6T’s starting price is Rs 37,999, and its top-end variant with 8GB of RAM/256GB of storage will cost you Rs 45,999.

On the other hand, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition’s price is set at Rs 50,999, which is pretty expensive for a smartphone but this Edition is actually worth the price. It comes with a very unique packaging, including nylon-braided charging caber and a charge and both of them are in signature papaya orange colour too.

If you are a McLaren fan or simply a fan of smartphones with an excellent finish then spending extra Rs. 5,000 will not really a huge deal, but for general users, the top-end variant of the standard OnePlus 6T should always be a better choice.
