Apple's newly-granted patent might suggest that the company will release a new foldable iPhone with a similar folding mechanism to the Huawei Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold.

We have seen Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola launch their foldable smartphones with very unique designs. Experts also said that folding screens will be the next trend in the smartphone industry, but Apple still doesn't seem to care much about this new trend.

There is evidence, though, that Apple is quietly researching and developing foldable iPhones as it has just been granted a new patent titled "Foldable cover and display for an electronic device".

According to this patent, the device will have a flexible screen, which is attached to a hingle. It's basically similar to Samsung Galaxy Fold or Huawei Mate X. However, Apple devices can work even when the screen is not fully opened, just like the Galaxy Z Flip.
The Cupertino-based giant also doesn't want to make the mistakes of Samsung or Motorola, when the display of the foldable smartphone is too fragile and vulnerable. Therefore, Apple uses a chemical reinforcement layer and the hinge can be made of ceramic material to increase durability. A special unit is integrated to heat the screen when the temperature is too low, as we all know that low temperatures can make folding screens more susceptible to damage.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks a foldable iPhone won't be available as soon as we expect. The earliest date is probably the end of 2021. The reason is that Apple is always very careful when launching a new device or technology. Released foldable smartphones also show that they still have a lot of problems that need to be resolved before becoming truly popular.
