Wi-Fi 6 With A Faster Connection Speed Is Coming And Here Is What You Need To Know

Wi-Fi 6 is a whole new version of the kind of Wi-Fi we have been using over the last ten years, with a boost in speed and efficiency

5G might be in the limelight recently, but it does not mean we have no use for Wi-Fi anymore. In fact, a new version of it is about to arrive and here is what you should know.

On Monday, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced that Wi-Fi 6 certifications would be offered to manufacturers soon. This means the Alliance will make sure that all devices supporting Wi-Fi 6 will have to meet specific standards, and those that do will have a badge on the package to let users know about it.

So far, the launching process seems to be good, but what does that mean to us, the actual users? Here is the answer:

In short, Wi-Fi 6 is a whole new version of the kind of Wi-Fi we have been using over the last ten years, with a boost in speed and efficiency. As we have seen upgrades from 3G to 4G, and this year, a leap to 5G, Wi-Fi technology is going down the same road.

Users are becoming increasingly demanding from the Internet connection, from smoothly streaming 4K videos to video games. And that is a good thing; it serves as a motivation for this technology to get better over time.

The most enticing feature of Wi-Fi 6 is that it is capable of providing a much faster connection to users, a speed current Wi-Fi cannot beat. According to some tests, this new version’s download speed is 1000 percent faster than that of the existing version in the United States.

That speed is impressive, and according to the Wi-Fi Alliance, Wi-Fi 6 has another huge advantage. You may notice that with our current connection, the more people connect to the same network, the slower the connection is. However, that issue is no more with this new version. Wherever you are, in a packed stadium or a café, the quality and speed of the connection will be improved with Wi-Fi 6 in place.

For now, the deployment of this upgrade is still at its infant stage. If you want to take advantage of this technology, you have to own devices that meet certain standards.

As we speak, it is happening all over the world. Netgear and similar companies have already had routers that are Wi-Fi 6 compatible. The iPhone 11 and Samsung Galaxy S10 launching this year are the two phones supporting the standard. So the future when this new version becomes accessible to most people might not be too far off.

For now, most home networks are unable to support Wi-Fi 6 with its over 1,000 Mbps download speed. Even if you stretch your budget for a Galaxy S10 or an iPhone 11 but the networks you have access to can only go up to 200 Mbps; that will be a total waste of money. Imagine it is like buying a 5G smartphone to use 4G. You will still have an Internet connection, but all of the benefits of Wi-Fi 6 will be lost.

In 2019, most people are still unable to make use of the new Wi-Fi. However, it does not mean laying down rules and standards now is a waste of time. We need everything prepared before the infrastructure is ready. We might have to wait for a few more years to see a 1,000 Mbps download speed, but the good thing is, it is happening as we speak.
