Will AI Kill Coding Jobs? The Truth Might Surprise You

For years and now more than ever, we’ve heard that AI is coming for everyone’s jobs—from truck drivers to customer service reps. But what about programmers? Surely, if AI can write code, it can replace the very people who build it, right? Not so fast.

According to Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, AI will soon take over 80-90% of enterprise coding tasks. But before you start rewriting your resume, let’s look at the bigger picture.

Will AI Kill Coding Jobs?

AI Isn’t Replacing Coders—It’s Changing Their Role

Take John Giorgi, a 29-year-old developer who’s literally using AI to build… AI. He works for a healthcare startup that automates patient appointment notes, reducing doctors’ workload. But rather than writing every line of code himself, Giorgi relies on an AI-powered coding assistant.

“Just type a few characters, and AI suggests the rest,” he explains. It also finds bugs, suggests edits, and even runs basic tests. The result? Giorgi saves nearly an hour every day.

And he’s not alone. A recent Evans Data survey found that almost two-thirds of developers are already using AI-powered coding tools. Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, launched in 2021, leads the charge, with IBM, Salesforce, and countless startups jumping into the space.

The AI-Powered Developer: More Conductor, Less Keyboard Monkey

If AI is writing up to 80% of the code, what’s left for human programmers to do? Plenty. Coding isn’t just about typing—it’s about designing systems, choosing the right tech stack, debugging, and refining user experience.

As Dohmke puts it, “Developers will become conductors of an AI-powered orchestra.”

Rather than making coders obsolete, AI is shifting their focus to higher-level problem-solving. In fact, early research suggests AI coding tools can boost productivity by 10-30%. At KPMG, developers using GitHub Copilot save an average of 4.5 hours per week—and report better code quality.

The Catch? Junior Developers Might Have a Harder Time

Here’s the flip side: AI is great at handling repetitive, entry-level coding tasks—the kind usually given to junior developers and interns. Giorgi admits that before AI, he’d assign simple bug fixes to interns. Now, AI does it faster.

“If I were a new grad, I’d be worried,” he says. And he’s not wrong. The job market for junior developers has slowed down, though it’s unclear if AI is entirely to blame.

To stay competitive, coding bootcamps and training programs are adapting fast. Per Scholas, a nonprofit tech training organization, has updated its curriculum to teach students how to work with AI rather than against it.

So, Will AI Take Your Coding Job? Not Yet

Despite the hype, AI isn’t making programmers redundant—it’s just raising the bar. Future developers will need more than just coding chops; creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving will set the best apart.

Mark Zuckerberg once claimed AI could soon code at the level of a mid-tier engineer. But even he later admitted that AI will enhance developers rather than replace them. The programmers who thrive in this new landscape won’t be the ones who fear AI—they’ll be the ones who master it.

So, the next time someone tells you AI will steal all the coding jobs, just smile and type: AI.WriteBetter(“Humans still needed”);
