LGBTQ Community In India Benefits Greatly From Online Dating Apps: Survey

Adults from the LGBTQ community are convinced that online dating apps are the way forward to express their sexual orientation more freely

For the past five years, the discrimination towards the LGBTQ has significantly lessened, adults from the LGBTQ community are convinced that apps that serve the purpose of online dating are positively benefiting the community, particularly in India. This can be seen from the data provided by Tinder – an online dating platform – proving the fact.

According to Tinder’s internal survey, it is pointed out that as 44 percent of adults from LGBTQ community stated that they find online dating platforms a place to express themselves more freely, and another 61 percent of the people in the community choose to embrace their sexual orientation on this online dating platform, rather than to do so to their family and friends, while the other 39 percent pointed out that these platforms made it easier for them to probe into their own identities and genders.

It is pointed out that approximately 44 percent of adults from the LGBTQ community use dating platforms that are including all sexual orientations.

The internal survey hints that in terms of dating, apps for dating have been helping LGBTQ community in India find diversity, and 35 percent of people in the community who spend their time on these apps stated that their dating list is more diverse compared to that of their straight counterparts.

Tinder further stated that of the 73 percent people who stated that online dating had a positive impact, 33 pointed out that the platform gave more diversity of people to date in terms of sexual orientation, while 33 percent stated that in terms of culture and race that the platform gave more diversity of people to date.

It is highlighted by Tinder that amongst the 61 percent of LGBTQ’s adults that came out on online platforms. 67 percent of them were millennials, which was born within 1981 and 1996, while the other 51 percent were amongst the Gen Z group, which was born within 1995 and 2015.

In addition, the company pointed out that the millennials were more possible to officially come out, while 30 percent came out between the age of 16 to 20, the most common age to do so is 21-25, which is 33 percent.

The company highlighted that 30 percent of the people in the LGBTQ community stated that the pressure they felt while being in a relationship had lessened for the past half-decade, and one of five people today said that they felt less ashamed of their status of being single.
