Instagram Now Allows Its Users To Flag False Content

Although Facebook won’t possibly gain much change from allowing users to flag false content on Instagram in the near future, at least the company will have more time to establish more powerful detection tools.

Since August 15, Instagram has officially allowed its users to report all allegedly false content. Accordingly, the video-sharing social networking service will leverage these flags to get more knowledge about misinformation available on its platform. It can also train its artificial intelligence to detect false content.

Instagram will analyze the feedback and many other signals, from how an account behaves in the past and at present to how long a post appears, to check whether third-party fact-checkers need to review a post or not. The new project isn’t similar to the company’s pilot program which allows its users to report false content to fact-checkers in May. This program has been now under the pilot phase.
Here are the steps to flag fake content on Instagram:
1. Click the three-dot menu at the top corner of a post.
2. Choose “it’s inappropriate.”
3. Finally, select “false information.”
In case a post is determined incorrect, the platform won’t downplay it on hashtag pages and the Explore tab, instead of deleting it. Besides, Instagram won’t notify the post owner when his/her content is being reviewed. They also don’t know if the fact-checkers determine it is correct or false.

The posts on Instagram will be checked by the third-party fact-checkers who censor flagged content on Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg’s social media company knows there is an issue of fake news on its platform, and that’s why it has used third-party fact-checkers for many recent years. As one of these fact-checkers, Full Fact has recently revealed the fact-checking algorithms on the Facebook platform should operate more efficiently.
In fact, the company doesn’t always take action in time to remove fake news. For instance, it spent three years to handle a problem in Moldova. In addition, it has had no intention to delete all fake news concerning politicians. Although Facebook won’t possibly gain much change from allowing users to flag false content on Instagram in the near future, at least the company will have more time to establish more powerful detection tools.
