A giant puddle in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, a city in Russia, is said to be “invincible” after surviving unfixed for more than 25 years. And now, it has even got its own Instagram account with more than 16,000 followers.
It is common in Russia as well as other eastern European countries for small potholes to gradually turn into a giant puddle. Every since 1994, the locals have been contacting the authorities to get it fixed. And it has proven to be a futile endeavor. Scheduled repairs have just been delayed repeatedly. While waiting for it to be fixed, Nikolay, a local, decided that this 25-year-old pothole should have its own Instagram account. So in September, he created one for it. The witty sarcastic posts quickly became viral and caught the eyes of the local government.

Four days after the Instagram account was created, it received more than 3,000 visitors. And around a week later, it had gathered so much attention that the authorities had to do something about it.
In 2014, the locals appealed to the government of the city to fix the puddle. However, work was postponed until 2017, and to 2024. Instead of fixing it for good, they went for a temporary fix.
The next serious rainfall eventually revived the puddle, bigger than ever. By the end of October, the puddle has officially become a social media sensation. Russian influencers and Youtubers even made trips to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to visit the puddle and take some pictures with it.

In November, the authorities fix the puddle again with dry mud. Since it is now in winter with the cold temperatures, the puddle is now in its hibernation, until spring. But since the permanent repair is scheduled for 2024, it is possible that the puddle will make its return in 2021.
