On Wednesday, Google revealed the first look of the next version of its operating system, Android 11. The software is a preview version meant to be tested by app developers before its official release.
In Android 11, there will be a new feature that allows people to give apps one-time access to their location, camera data, and microphone. This is an upgrade from previous versions where developers had more broad access to user information. The new option means app developers can only obtain data for as long as the user is using the app. After they close the app and open it again, developers will have to once again ask for user consent.
Besides, the preview version of Android 11 includes other changes, such as new form factor upgrades that include foldable phones as well as pinhole screens that consume the whole front of the phone except for the camera. In another upgrade, developers can now take better advantage of 5G speeds.
In addition, in Android 11, messaging apps are improved. Users can now add images to their notification replies. And then there are chat bubbles that help you view conversations while using other applications.
Android is undeniably the most popular mobile OS across the globe, powering 90 percent of all smartphones on the planet. However, Google will face a challenge in delivering new Android versions to phones because phone makers and wireless carriers can slow down the process.
The search giant hasn’t rolled out use figures for Android 10 yet. But in May 2019 when Google updated its distribution figure, Android 9 Pie had been on just 10.4 percent of total Android smartphones. The three previous versions were on 64.4% of Android handsets. Meanwhile, iOS 13 has come to 70 percent of total iPhones.
Google will unveil more Android 11 features in May when it holds Google I/O, the annual developer conference.
