Apple Made iPhone 6S The Center Of Its "Made In India" Campaign

This act from Apple is the way it responds to a higher import tariff in India

Apple has always used its older iPhones models to give users an idea of the entry-level for their products. However, recently, the company has found a new use for its iPhone 6S. After four years on the market, it is now at the center of a campaign that focuses on advertising the locally-produced origin of the phone. This is not without a good reason, though. As nationalism is now a hot topic in the country, this move becomes highly relevant.

The year 2017 saw Apple brought the assembly line for iPhone SE to India and a year after that, the iPhones 6S joined the list as the government increased the import tariff to encourage “Made in India” merchandises. Apple acted according to what Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted by setting up its own manufacturing facility in the country as India is a too large and prominent market to lose hold of.

The trade war between the US and China happened for the same reason. However, it seems like Chinese companies have no interest in doing what Apple did by bringing their technology and factories to the US. On the contrary, they have reduced their investment to the country.

However, Apple’s biggest problem in securing a solid standing in the Indian market is not whether it produced its iPhones there or not, but rather, it is about the lack of budget-friendly smartphones on its portfolio. So far, its most successful smartphone in India is the iPhone 6. The iPhone SE and iPhone 6S are both old models. Apple has lots of stiff competition from Android smartphones makers as they seem to introduce new and improved models in just a few months. A prime example is the Realme X.

Most of them embrace the bezel-less design, have more storage, and superior cameras given their price. Some of the ways Apple could do to gain the market leader spot in India is to bring its higher-end models to the country too or come up with a more budget-friendly model.
