If 2018 witnessed the rise of notch design, this year will end its appearance on smartphones. Recently, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Asus, Realme, and Samsung have introduced their new devices with full-view notch-free displays. The biggest obstacles for phone makers to produce a real bezel-less full-display smartphone include selfie camera, microphone as well as other sensors. These phone makers have made some steps closer to their goal by introducing the pop-up camera design. In fact, Asus has stepped a bit further when introducing a flip camera module working as rear and front camera.
The biggest challenge to create a truly full-view display smartphone is how to put the front-facing camera under the screen like the on-screen fingerprint sensor. According to the previous report, Oppo, Samsung, and Huawei are working on their own in-display camera smartphone. Recently, another phone maker, Xiaomi has filed a patent for this new feature.
Xiaomi’s patent has appeared online which showcases the ambition of this company to launch an on-screen camera module on its smartphone. As per the company’s patent application which is already translated, the company intends to put a secondary screen under the primary one that is expected to be in front of light sensor and selfie camera. Accordingly, the camera will appear whenever users open the camera app and disappear when not required. So far, the mechanism of Xiaomi’s on-screen camera remains unknown. However, the phone maker is likely to realize this technology.
Xiaomi’s explanation is so simple and vague, which doesn’t clearly show the way the secondary screen will let the camera to see through primary screen. And the company seems to not share more news to protect its new design. Previously, Oppo has teased a video about its on-screen camera module and plans to introduce its first phone with this new feature by the end of this year. The notch used to be cool until pop-up front camera appears. However, it is likely that both technologies will be replaced by the on-screen camera design.
