A few days ago, sources from Taiwan's supply chain leaked an Apple meeting with a local touch screen manufacturer. The discussion was tipped to be around deploying in-screen fingerprint scanner technology for future iPhone models.
Bloomberg's sources also confirmed that Apple is testing an advanced in-display fingerprint scanner solution. Most likely Apple will use Qualcomm's new solution for ultrasonic fingerprint sensors to increase the scanning area on the screen.
What would this mean in practice? It means that you can use the entire bottom half of the screen to read fingerprints instead of trying to place your finger into a fixed position with a small area as before. We can imagine how easy it will be to use on the upcoming 5.4-inch iPhone 12 model.
Touch ID is a backup plan for Face ID
You might think that keeping two biometric methods on a phone is unnecessary. The reason Apple will keep two biometric methods on the new iPhone is that Face ID also serves other purposes like creating Memoji. Moreover, the wide notch has also become a key design element of the iPhone.
Many people think that despite the advantages of Face ID that Apple touts, it is only a matter of time before returning to Touch ID. Therefore, we have to wait and see if the iPhone 12 can be simultaneously unlocked with both Touch ID and Face ID.
However, Apple is said to be waiting for ultrasonic fingerprint scanning technology to become cheap enough to use on the iPhone. In fact, Apple and Qualcomm had a truce, so their use of 3D Sonic Max technology was entirely possible.
