After releasing the official teasers for the Google Pixel 5 and Google Pixel 4a 5G earlier this summer, the tech giant has finally announced the two smartphones during its Launch Night In event last night.
Google Pixel 5
As for the Pixel 5, Google is trying a few different things. Rather than directly competing with premium smartphones from Samsung, Apple, as well as other brands, it aims at a budget flagship. That’s why the Google Pixel 5 comes at a price of $700 (Rs 51,490).

As a result, instead of the Snapdragon 865 chipset, the Pixel 5 is powered by the Snapdragon 765G processor, featuring 8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, and a 4000mAh battery. The handset sports an OLED display measuring 6 inches with a refresh rate of 90Hz, along with dual cameras on the back, including a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 12MP primary lens. It lacks the 2x telephoto sensor on the Pixel 4 but you will still get the Super res Zoom feature.
As strange as this new approach may seem, lowering the ambition for the new flagship device makes sense. When it comes to flaship smartphones, the Pixel series has already been outnumbered by Samsung and Apple. In addition, unlike high-end Galaxy phones and iPhones, the best aspects of Pixels have never been about the hardware. Instead, it delivers solid but not premium specifications at a more affordable price, with the main focus on the software and the overall user experience.
However, it’s worth noting that this time, Google left out the Motion Sense and used a conventional fingerprint sensor. You can still unlock the Pixel 5 with your face, but it won’t be as secure as on the iPhone.
In addition to the Qi wireless charging feature, the Google Pixel 5 will also deliver the reverse wireless charging feature so that you can charge your wireless earbuds on the go.
The tech giant has improved the image quality for the smartphone by applying a new focus bracketing feature working with HDR to generate more colorful, brighter shots while adding the Night Sight feature to the Portrait Mode. Besides, there is the Portrait Light tool that you can use to prevent elements like a backlit scene from ruining your photo.
In terms of video recording, the tech giant introduced 3 stabilizing modes aimed to help you record steady footage, as well as the new Cinematic Pan mode to capture more engaging footage. On top of that, there is the Extreme Battery Saver mode allowing you to select which features to disable to save power.
Last but not least, both the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G gets upgraded Duplex, featuring a new feature called Hold for Me. It helps the handset detect when you are on hold, then ping you when the other person answers your call. That means you don’t have to sit around and wait until your call’s actually picked up.
Google Pixel 4a 5G
Alongside the Google Pixel 5, the tech giant also announced the Google Pixel 4a 5G, which is basically a larger, more powerful version of the Pixel 4a, adding 5G compatibility. With a price starting at $500 (Rs 36,775), $150 (Rs 11,032) higher than the Pixel 4a.
The Google Pixel 4a 5G comes with a 6.2-inch OLED screen, compared with the 5.8-inch panel on the Pixel 4a. The handset is powered by the Snapdragon 765G as opposed to the Snapdragon 730G processor on the smaller cousin. There’s also a headphone jack.
The handset features 6HB RAM and 128GB onboard memory. There is a dual-camera module on the back, including an ultra-wide-angle lens. In terms of the battery, the Pixel 4a 5G delivers 3885 mAh of capacity with a promise of 48 hours of battery life.
