Over the last few years, the mid-range smartphone market has been boring. They often have unmemorable names and overused features. But the new Reno 4 Pro from Chinese smartphone-maker Oppo is getting away from that narrative.
The Reno 4 Pro was launched in India on July 31. Technically, it is a midrange phone, however, it comes with features that are normally found in more expensive flagships. The smartphone is packed with a curved 90Hz display, a set of stereo speakers, and ultrafast charging. But since it is still a mid-range phone, it needs to make some sacrifices. 5G capability is the biggest thing that the Reno 4 Pro is missing. According to Oppo, this is because the company wants the phone to fit the countries where the smartphone is being released.

Meanwhile, the Chinese version of the phone does come with 5G capabilities. Oppo Reno price in China is 3,799 yuan or around $540. Oppo Reno 4 Pro price in India is Rs 34,990 or around $470. The company hasn’t released the prices of the phone in other countries yet. After India, Oppo will launch the Reno 4 Pro at some Asian countries including Indonesia and Singapore, and some European countries. But Oppo won’t be launching the phone in the US.
A 4,000-mAh battery and ultrafast charging
Oppo has long had an interest in ultrafast battery charging. And this has driven the company to come up with some of the fastest charging techs. Its 125W charger can boost up the phone in just 20 minutes. And it has been adopting this tech, which was previously only reserved for more expensive or flagship smartphones, to its mid-range phones.

The Reno 4 Pro has 65W fast charging called “SuperVOOC 2.0.” The technology is said to be able to take 36 minutes to boost up a depleted 4,000mAh battery. To compare, an Apple iPhone has a standard 5W charger. This charging tech can also be found on the super-premium flagship of Oppo, the Find X2 Pro.
Besides the speedy charging, according to Oppo, it has made some changes to its power-saving modes to be more efficient. Once you switch the “Super Power Saving Mode” on, you can continue making calls for 77 minutes or using WhatsApp for 1.5 hours even with only 5% of battery. Meanwhile, Oppo states that its Super Night Time Standby only uses up 2% of battery over 8 hours overnight.

A 90Hz curved design
The Reno 4 Pro has a 6.5-inch curved AMOLED display. The phone is one of the slimmest and lightest phones on the market at the moment with a weight of only 161 grams. Its thickness is only 7.7mm despite having a large battery. To compare, the pocketable Galaxy S20 of Samsung is 164 grams and 7.9mm.
The display has a 90Hz refresh rate while most phones come with a 60Hz display. Reno 4 Pro’s faster screen allows for smoother animations, crispier text and images, and an overall immersive and smooth experience.

The rear panel of the smartphone is made using a fiber with a frosted glass finish. Oppo Reno 4 Pro comes in two color options. For protection, Gorilla Glass 5 is used.
On the right side is the power button while the volume buttons are on the left side. At the top are a mic hole and the SIM tray. At the bottom are the 3.5mm audio port, the speaker grille, and the Type-C port.
5 cameras
With the Reno 4 Pro, it is easy to take vibrant and crisp photos. Even low-light photos look impressive.

On its back, the smartphone has four cameras. The main camera is a 48MP one with Sony’s IMX 586 sensor. There is an 8MP ultrawide lens, a 2MP macro lens, and a mono camera. On the front, there is a 32MP selfie camera.
Performance
Compare to the 5G variant that has Snapdragon 765G chip, the non-5G variant is powered by the Snapdragon 720G. Clearly, if your priority is performance, you should consider other phones like the OnePlus 7T, OnePlus Nord or Realme X2 Pro. Gaming is expected to be the Reno 4 Pro’s biggest casualty. If you aren’t one to push your smartphone to the limit, it is still fine. The smartphone comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage which you can expand via a microSD card slot.
