A new Xiaomi smartphone will reportedly launch soon with a 48MP camera. President of Xiaomi, Bin Lin, already teased this handset earlier, indicating that it will launch in somewhere January next year. Now, an unofficial source recently suggested on a Weibo post that the upcoming Xiaomi handset in question is the mid-range device Redmi Pro 2.
While those details aren’t fully specific, the upcoming Redmi Pro 2 was mentioned in that post alongside the Redmi Pro series. The post, which is in Chinese, suggests that the device be ‘a national flagship’, further strengthening the speculation of it featuring a 48MP camera. It might also suggest that the camera tech on this handset is on development for nearly 3 years.
The same unofficial source also further confirms the 48MP camera on the Redmi Pro 2 by uploading a new teaser, showing the upcoming handset will be the first one to have a Snapdragon 675 processor which was introduced two months ago and is claimed to have higher efficiencies than its mid-range counterparts. Qualcomm also said that its new Snapdragon 675 also offers better AI-related tasks, superior imaging and graphics performance to mid-range smartphones. The Qualcomm chipset also supports QC 4+, which is claimed to charge up a phone’s battery from 0 to 50 percent in 15 minutes.
The reason why suggesting a Snapdragon 675 SoC on the Redmi Pro 2 has anything to do with the 48MP camera is that the maximum imaging capability of the SoC can go up to processing 48MP images. While this post on Weibo has only revealed possible teaser posters, there should be more leaks about this Xiaomi phone in the upcoming weeks. Being a successor to the Redmi in 2016, it will be pretty interesting to see if the Chinese company will launch its Redmi Pro 2 out of the Chinese market.
In between, the Chinese company will release a new gaming smartphone with the name Xiaomi Play that it has been teasing in the past few days.
