Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi launched the budget Redmi 8 in October, which is only around two months. However, it appears that Xiaomi has already been working its successor called Redmi 9 and the phone is tipped to be coming soon.
As per a new rumor, the direct successor to the Redmi 8 will arrive in early 2020 and will get processing power from the MediaTek Helio G70 SoC, which hasn’t been announced yet. We haven’t got many details about the chipset, but given the numbering/naming scheme, we believe that it should be positioned below the Helio G90 SoC in terms of performance and should be used mostly on more affordable smartphones.
To recall, the Redmi 8 is packed with a Snapdragon 439 SoC, while the Redmi Note 8 Pro is driven by an Helio G90T. We can’t say how well the Redmi 9 will go against these two smartphones in the performance department. However, we strongly believe that it should be significantly more powerful than the Redmi 8.
In other leaks, the Redmi 9 is tipped to feature a 6.6-inch display with a notch design, which is significantly increased from the 6.22-inch screen on the Redmi 8. Its base variant will carry 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, up from 3GB RAM / 32GB storage in its predecessor. There might be higher models available at launch as well.
We won’t be surprised if the Redmi 9 comes with the new Android 10 and Xiaomi’s MIUI 11 out of the box. There could be several improvements in the camera department too, but no details have been leaked regarding that. If the phone is indeed coming soon, we should hear more about it in the coming days.
The Redmi 8 is currently priced at Rs. 7,999 for the 3GB RAM / 32GB storage variant while the 4GB RAM / 64GB option costs Rs. 8,999. The price of the upcoming Redmi 9 shouldn't be too far off from this mark.
