Premium build, stylish design and unique features are something you would expect for a smartphone in the high-end segment, and the latest Oppo R17 Pro can offer all of them. With the current price of Rs. 45,990, the R17 Pro is a pretty good deal. But how about the other competitors?
At the price range, the Oppo handset competes against the OnePlus 6T and the Vivo NEX. So can the stunning aesthetic and the unique features of the Oppo device be enough to stand out in the competition, or are its powerful specs enough to keep its status quo?
Software and Specifications
All of the three devices have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. However, OnePlus offers a lower variant with 6GB of RAM/128GB of storage and a top-end variant with 8GB RAM/256GB storage for its OnePlus 6T.
OnePlus 6T comes in more variants than other two phones
In terms of chipset, the Oppo R17 Pro is a bit behind compared to the other two. Both the Vivo NEX and the OnePlus 6T sport a top-end Snapdragon 845 chipset, while the Oppo R17 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 710 SoC.
Both the OnePlus and Oppo handsets have a 3,700 mAh battery under the hood, while the Vivo device comes with a slightly larger 4,000 mAh battery. Also, all three handsets support fast charging, with Oppo in the leading position thanks to the company’s super VOOC charging technology. As we tested, 40 minutes was the time it took to fully charge the Oppo handset, which is the lowest amount of time among all three devices.
Interestingly, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus still keep using an on-screen fingerprint scanner on their phones. The speed and accuracy of all three phone’s fingerprint sensor are decent, although using optical scanning tech will require you to place your finger at the right place to unlock each of these three devices.

The Vivo NEX and the Oppo R17 Pro run Android 8 Oreo, but Vivo and Oppo also use their own custom UIs on their devices, FunTouch OS and Color OS respectively. In this aspect, OnePlus 6T has an edge as it initially runs Android 9 Pie along with the highly praised customized version of Android - OxygenOS. And OnePlus has a reputation of regularly updating their devices’ software and new features as well, while the Vivo and Oppo’s standing in the aspect is quite lower.
Design and Display
The OnePlus 6T and Oppo R17 Pro have pretty much the same displays. Both devices come with a 6.4-inch FullHD+ AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 along with a waterdrop-style notch at the top for sensors and front camera. And both displays are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
Vivo NEX has the biggest display out of the three with 6.6 inches in size
Meanwhile, the Vivo handset has the biggest display of the three, featuring a 6.6-inch FullHD+ AMOLED display with a similar aspect ratio. Interestingly, there is no notch for the Vivo NEX so you can get a proper edge-to-edge design. Its front-facing camera is located on a motorized pop-up module which will activate when you need it.
In the design aspect, the OnePlus and Oppo handsets have several similarities. Both of the devices have the same glass back, metal frame and a remarkably similar look from all angles. Obviously, there are still some differences like color options, SIM tray placement of Oppo device and lack of an alert slider. The Oppo handset has a stunning unique colour variant, Radiant Mist, which is a combination of blue and violet. Meanwhile, the Vivo device also has a similar metal and glass combination in its build, with a unique reflective back which looks different from many angles.

Camera
While both the Vivo NEX and OnePlus 6T feature a dual rear camera setup, the Oppo R17 Pro once again is leading in this aspect with a triple rear camera system. The Oppo device comes with a 12MP primary sensor, a 20MP secondary sensor and a TOF 3D sensor, which is mostly used in professional equipment to capture 3D information. However, the 3D sensor cannot be used independently, and it is hard to tell where it’s utilized.

The Oppo handset also has a primary sensor with dual aperture, which can switch between f1.5 and f2.4 depending on the light conditions. Its 20MP secondary sensor is pretty similar to the ones on Oppo and OnePlus devices', enabling lossless zoom and depth effect shots. The Vivo phone has a 5MP secondary sensors for taking portrait shots.
For the front-facing camera, the Oppo device features a 2MP ultra-wide sensor while the Vivo NEX has an 8MP sensor and the OnePlus 6T comes with a 16MP sensor. As mentioned, the front-facing camera of the Vivo Next sits on a pop-up mechanical module that can activate when needed. And whenever it is not in use, it will be placed safely away, allowing phone users to use an edge-to-edge notch-less display.

Price and Availability
At the price of Rs. 45,990, the Oppo handset stays in the same price range as the Vivo NEX and OnePlus 6T, so the price is not really going to be a deciding factor that influences buyer’s decision between the three devices. However, while OnePlus only offers its R17 Pro mostly online and very limited in offline retail channels, the Vivo NEX and the Oppo R17 can be purchased easier thanks to the companies’ wider offline channels.
To conclude, the final decision still depends on what users need on a smartphone. For example, if you are looking for a phone that offers powerful performance and well-made software, the OnePlus 6T may be a better choice. If you want a smartphone with fast charging and camera capabilities, the Oppo R17 Pro has the advantages. But if you are paying more attention to the display, the Vivo NEX has an edge here.
