OPPO A9 2020: Features & Specifications

The handset was announced with a 6.5-inch screen with HD+ resolution and a water-drop notch at the top to house a selfie camera. Under the hood, there is a Snapdragon 665 SoC ticking at its core with 4/8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. On the software side of things, it ships with Android 9 Pie out of the box with ColorOS 6.1 on top.

In terms of cameras, it has a quad-camera lens cluster at the back that includes a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide camera with a 119-degree field of view, a 2MP monochrome sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, it gets a 16MP camera for taking selfies and video chats. The handset also comes with dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos on top, reverse charging, and Widevine Le certification for HD video playback. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, 4G VoLTE, GPS/ GLONASS/ Beidou, and Bluetooth v5.0. Its dimensions and weight are 163.6 x 75.6 x 9.1 mm and 195g, respectively.

OPPO A9 2020: Review in India

The back design of the A9 2020 inherits many features from the Oppo Reno. The device comes in two color versions, purple and blue, which feature eye-catching radiant color. The glossy back feels like glass when looking at, but it's just polycarbonate. The entire chassis is also made of plastic. The fingerprint sensor is located on the back, just below the camera cluster instead of an in-screen fingerprint sensor like on the Oppo K3.

OPPO A9 2020 launch date is September 11th, a bit earlier than its India launch.

Just like other Oppo mid-range devices, the screen protrudes from the chassis, so you might feel a bit uncomfortable holding this phone compared to others in the market.

This phone's bezels are a bit thick, but you can't expect much considering the OPPO A9 2020 is only Rs. 13,990.

Despite having a 5,000 mAh battery, the thickness of the Oppo A9 2020 is still that high, only slightly thicker than smartphones with a 4,000 mAh battery. It can also be turned into a power bank to charge other devices thanks to the OTG connection.

The handset is already up for sales since the OPPO A9 2020 launch date in India is September 16th.

However, this phone doesn't have Oppo's signature VOOC fast charging. The charger comes with a capacity of only 10W, which might be a bit too low for the phone’s massive 5,000mAh battery.

Unlike previous models that were only equipped with a micro USB port, Oppo has made progress when switching to USB Type C port on its latest mid-range smartphone. The device still has the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack and a pair of earbuds inside the box.

In addition, the A9 2020 has a separate micro SD memory card slot and 2 SIM slots so users can use 2 SIM + memory cards at the same time.

Woud you pay for this phone if the OPPO A9 2020 price in India is Rs. 13,990?

On the front, the mid-range smartphone from Oppo returns with the familiar water drop design. The side and top bezels are slim, but the chin is still significantly thicker, which is expected for a mid-range smartphone.

With a size of 6.5 inches, the screen is quite large. It also has a 20:9 aspect ratio and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3+. Unfortunately, the resolution is limited to only HD + (720 x 1600 pixels). Overall, the TFT LCD panel of the A9 2020 offers just an acceptable level of sharpness and detail as well as limited viewing angle, contrast, and color reproduction.

The display quality is pretty mediocre.

To somewhat compensate for the screen, Oppo offers a dual speaker system equipped with Dolby Atmos technology by using an additional speakerphone as a second speaker, creating a stereo multichannel sound effect. A quick test with the system shows that the dual speakers of the A9 2020 have a high volume, not getting distorted when maximized. The stereo effect is relatively clear. The volume of the speakerphone is still a bit lower than the speaker on the bottom edge.

A glimpse at the back, it seems that the A9 2020 has only triple cameras, but if you look closely, it will see a fourth camera next to the flash cluster. This quad-camera system includes a 48MP camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2MP black and white camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. Oppo said that the 2MP black-and-white camera is only used for taking monochrome portraits, not to improve low-light shots like Huawei once did. On the front sits a 16MP selfie camera.

The new thing about the 48MP camera on the A9 2020 is that it allows HDR, AI even when using 48MP mode. Switching to the ultra-wide-angle camera is a bit inconvenient when it only allows pressing of the corresponding function button and does not support zoom. Taking quick shots with the 48MP camera in normal portrait mode as well as monochrome portrait mode shows that the images have good quality, sharpness, good details, and bright colors.

This design looks somewhat similar to the one on the Realme 6 Pro.

In terms of performance, with Snapdragon 665 chipset, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, A9 2020 delivers a completely smooth and responsive experience. I rarely had to reload the app. After being quickly measured by AnTuTu, the device scores about 130,000 points, on par with phones with a Snapdragon 660 chipset.

With PUGB Mobile, the A9 2020 can at best run the game at ‘Balance’ graphics with. The game fluctuates around 25 fps, hence, it is playable but not smooth and you might sometimes experience a slight lag.
