OnePlus 7 Pro was the strongest candidate for the best-feature-lowest-price throne for this year until Honor 20 Pro appears.
There is no fair competition, and we have done our best to make a reasonable comparison here. However, as Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei, no one can count out the latest tension between China and the US that has led to Google stopping all Android services for Huawei devices. If you take Android updates seriously, OnePlus 7 Pro is a safer bet for now.
So let’s see which one deserves your money and the best value for money spot this year.
Honor 20 Pro vs. OnePlus 7 Pro Design
The two phones share a similar appearance when both of them have a flat back and curved sides. The only thing that can set them apart is the bulge on the Honor 20 Pro. While the technology packed in the phone is enough to compensate for almost everything, if you put them both on the table, the OnePlus 7 pro will lay flatter on any surface.
On the other side, the difference seems a little bit more visible. OnePlus has determined to omit the notch completely to achieve an uninterrupted display. That is why it added the pop-up mechanism to hide the selfie camera when users have no use for it. For those who dislike notches, the smartphone from OnePlus is obviously a sweeter deal than the Honor with a hole-punch design.
OnePlus 7 Pro has an in-screen fingerprint sensor, so when the two phones are lying flat, users will find it easier to activate the phone than the side-mounted one on the Honor 20 Pro.
So in short, OnePlus 7 Pro is the winner in design.
Honor 20 Pro vs. OnePlus 7 Pro Display
OnePlus 7 Pro’s display is one of the two highlights; the other one is the camera setup. However, Honor 20 Pro also has a superior screen compared with other smartphones on the same price bracket.
The Honor smartphone is no match for OnePlus when it comes to refreshing rate and resolution. The 90 Hz will make users feel like everything reacts faster than with the standard 60 Hz.
About the size, OnePlus 7 Pro has a 6.67-inch AMOLED display and 1440 x 3120 pixels, while Honor gives its latest phone a 6.26-inch LCD screen and 1080 x 2340 pixel resolution. So in short, you will have a sharper display with the former.
So when it comes to display, OnePlus wins.
Honor 20 Pro vs. OnePlus 7 Pro Camera And Battery
Now the part most people are looking forward to. On paper, the two phones have similar specs. They both have a 48 MP primary snapper, 16 MP ultra-wide lenses, and an 8 MP telephoto camera.
Since Honor 20 Pro has a fourth lens for taking photos up close, this might tip the scale toward this phone.
On the other side, Honor shows its advantages again. The 32 MP selfie camera is obviously more impressive than the 16 MP on OnePlus 7 Pro.
So for now, in terms of cameras, Honor 20 Pro is the champion here. We will have to wait and see photo samples of them both to have a more accurate comparison.
The two phones also share the same 4,000mAh battery. The only difference is the 22.5W fast-charging of Honor 20 Pro and 30W fast-charging of OnePlus 7 Pro.
Honor 20 Pro vs. OnePlus 7 Pro Power
The Honor 20 Pro has the same processor, the Kirin 980, with Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Huawei P30 Pro. On the last phone, it has scored 9,669 in a Geekbench 4 CPU test.
OnePlus 7 Pro runs on Snapdragon 855, a newer one in comparison with the Kirin. This chipset was given 10,960 on the same test. So when we look at the numbers, OnePlus smartphone obviously has the edge here.
Under the hood, the Honor 20 Pro features RAM of 8 GB and onboard storage of 256 GB while the OnePlus 7 Pro has RAM of 6 GB and 128 GB of storage. You can have the same figures as with the Honor phone, but you will have to pay more for them.
The two phones have Android 9 by standard, but since Google has cut any Huawei device off future updates, OnePlus 7 Pro will be a safer deal in the long run.
Honor 20 Pro vs. OnePlus 7 Pro Price
Honor 20 Pro will set you back Rs. 46,590 (this is the expected price only) while OnePlus 7 Pro will cost you Rs. 48,999. The difference is not so much if you prefer the advantages of the latter. So the only problem here is personal preference.
However, for some people, OnePlus 7 Pro has the edge only after the US ban on Huawei.
Takeaway
This is not the fairest comparison we can pull off for these two hottest smartphones. We will get back to this review when we have a chance to experience the Honor 20 Pro more thoroughly. But for the specs, OnePlus 7 Pro seems to be more superior in almost every way, except for the camera arrangement.
Its display is sharper, the battery can be charged to full in less time, and the appearance looks more premium. However, when it comes to cameras, the Honor 20 Pro has the advantage in the additional 2 MP snapper, which the company said was an experiment.
So our initial conclusion here is OnePlus 7 Pro is a better deal. However, it does not mean that everyone should choose this phone instead of the Honor 20 Pro.
These two phones might be different by a small margin, but their prices, despite makers’ effort, are quite close to those of Samsung Galaxy S10e and iPhone XR, which are definitely better.
So for now, if you do not want to pay the extra expense for a smartphone from Apple or Samsung, OnePlus 7 Pro and Honor 20 Pro are both prime candidates, with the former comes out ahead slightly.
