Nokia 8.3 5G Review: A Solid 5G Handset That Won't Break The Bank

Nokia 8.3 5G offers the latest connectivity technology along with decent mid-range specs

If you are on the market for smartphones with 5G support that doesn’t break the bank, Nokia 8.3 5G is one of them. The phone offers the latest connectivity technology along with decent mid-range specs.

Nokia 8.3 5G Price And Release Date

Nokia 8.3 5G price in India is expected to be Rs. 47890. In other parts of the world, the phone comes at the price of $ 699.99.

Nokia 8.3 5G Design

The design of the Nokia 8.3 5G is similar to that of other HMD Global’s previous handsets, with Gorilla Glass on the back and metal central band. Thanks to the refracted light design, the phone looks quite unique.

The phone comes in only one shade – a blue color dubbed Polar Night by HMD Global.

The handset is big with a 6.81-inch display, a dimension of 171.90x78.56x8.99mm, and a weight of 227 grams.

The power button on the right side doubles as the fingerprint sensor so you can unlock the phone and wake it at the same time. The volume rocker is above the power button and is easy to reach.

On the opposite side sits the Google Assistant button so you can issue commands and have tasks done.

Nokia 8.3 5G still has the 3.5mm headphone jack – a piece of good news for fans of wired headsets.

Nokia 8.3 5G Display

Nokia 8.3 5G sports a 6.81-inch Full HD+ display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, meaning the phone is larger than many other handsets without feeling too big in your hand.

The 1080x2400 resolution doesn’t make for a sharp screen or detailed content but it’s fine for usual tasks.

Unfortunately, this handset still has the dated 60Hz refresh rate while many other mid-range smartphones on the market have had 90Hz and above.

The punch-hole notch at the top-left corner of the display isn’t very obtrusive so users don’t have to worry that they would be distracted by it.

Nokia 8.3 5G Camera

The Nokia 8.3 5G features a quad-camera setup comprising of a 64MP f/1.89 primary snapper, a 2MP macro camera, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 12MP ultra-wide snapper. While this setup can’t hold a candle to what we have on the Nokia 9 PureView, it does a decent job, giving users sharable pictures.

On paper, you have four cameras but in reality, you can’t exactly rely on the 2MP macro snapper and the depth sensor as they are mediocre at best.

By default, all shots taken by the primary camera is are 16MP. If you want to make the most of the 64MP snapper, you will need to switch to the Pro mode instead.

The auto mode does a good job taking good-looking photos in daylight. If you want to squeeze more details into shots, you can also turn to the ultra-wide mode. We find that the latter’s picture quality is similar to that of the former.

Nokia 8.3 5G does have a night mode but all it can do is to capture pictures a bit brighter than they otherwise would be. However, there is nothing impressive here.

The phone features a 24MP selfie camera that can yield some impressive shots. It’s good when you make video calls too.

The company has added some new video-shooting modes here, including Action Cam designed to capture smoother footage of fast-moving subjects, 21:1 cinematic mode, and 4K/24PFS.

Nokia 8.3 5G Specs And Performance

Nokia 8.3 5G is the first HMD Global phone with support for 5G and the company has wasted no chance to make a big deal out of it, calling the phone a ‘global 5G smartphone.’

At launch, the phone supports more 5G bands than any other handsets on the market. Many other rival phones aren’t compatible with bands like n5 or n71 which are more common in remote areas. So in short, you have a better signal with the Nokia 8.3 5G than other phones wherever you are.

Since this is a mid-range phone, the chipset inside can’t be a high-end one. Under the hood, the handset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765. The processor packs enough power for everyday tasks with apps opening quickly.

The phone comes equipped with stock Android 10 out of the box so there is no bloatware you should concern yourself with.

Users get the choice to acquire the phone with either 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. If you can, go for the latter variant for some extra space.

Nokia 8.3 5G Battery Life

A large display and 5G connectivity can be the downfall for any smartphone but fortunately, Nokia 8.3 5G can still make it through a day.

The phone draws power from a 4,500mAh battery and it charges quickly. But you won’t have access to bells and whistles like reverse or wireless charging.
