We are now in September, the month that Apple usually announces its new iPhone series. However, things are different this year as it seems like Apple won’t introduce the iPhone 12 lineup this month, but the launch event is reportedly moved to October. Despite that, we have got a lot of details about the upcoming iPhone models. If you are curious about the iPhone 12 lineup, here is all info about them we have.
How many models?
We expect the next iPhone lineup to be called iPhone 12, but it could launch in four models instead of three. The iPhone 11 will reportedly feature a 5.4-inch screen, the iPhone 12 Max & 12 Pro will both have a 6.1-inch display, and the top-end iPhone 12 Pro Max will have a massive 6.7-inch display. To recall, Apple releases three models in 2019, including 6.1-inch iPhone 11, 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro, and 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Design
Apple usually refreshes its iPhone's design every three years and applies some changes. After iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone 11 shared similarities in the design department, the upcoming iPhone series is expected to come with a new design. Rumor has it that Apple could even bring back some design elements from the old iPhone 4 models.
Up until now, multiple sources have agreed that Apple will release four iPhone 12 models, but how it is going to name them is yet to be revealed. According to the latest leak by Lovetodream, the base model in the series with a 5.4-inch display could be called iPhone 12 Mini. Previously, we heard that the base model would be called iPhone 12, followed by iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The 12 Mini will likely have a 5.4-inch screen, while the iPhone 12 & 12 Pro will share the same 6.1-inch display. The most premium 12 Pro Max will carry a large 6.7-inch display. For the first time, Apple will use OLED panels on all of the iPhones, instead of using an LCD panel on the most affordable offering. It is great news as OLED panels offer deeper black levels and consume less battery.
Another interesting leak from DigiTimes suggests that there could be new colors as well. Specifically, the upcoming iPhone 12 could come in a Dark Blue colorway. The news is reinforced by XDA Developers writer Max Weinbach, who said back in January that the current Midnight Green option would be replaced by a Navy Blue color. It is unclear whether all models will have the new color, or it is only exclusive for the premium Pro models.
Hardware
1. OLED display
All four models are said to come with an edge-to-edge design and OLED display, unlike last year where the affordable iPhone 11 only gets an IPS LCD panel. In addition, the Pro models are expected to have a 120Hz refresh rate, which is only available on the flagship iPad Pro at the moment.
Apple will bring a retro feel to the iPhone 12 series with the iPhone 4 and iPad Pro-like design.
2. Chipset
The upcoming iPhones should be powered by the new A14 chipset. It will certainly be more powerful than its predecessor A13 seen on the iPhone 11 lineup. According to reports, the new chipset’s CPU will have a 40 percent higher performance while the GPU will be 50 percent more powerful than that of the A13. Not just that, the battery life of the iPhone 12 could also be improved because the size of the chipset is said to be reduced from 7nm to just 5nm.
3. LiDAR scanner
Leaked renders suggest that the high-end iPhone 12 Pro could feature triple cameras at the back while the standard iPhone 12 versions might only have two. However, all of them will feature larger sensors while the top-end options could come with a LiDAR scanner seen on the iPad Pro 2020. The LiDAR scanner is very useful in AR apps as it allows the phone to measure the distance to surrounding objects within 5 meters.
No charger and EarPods
Rumor has it that Apple has decided to not include a charger and a pair of EarPods on all models in the upcoming iPhone series.
Price
Apple surprised many of its fans when setting the iPhone 11 price at $699 (around Rs. 50,000), which is $50 cheaper than its predecessor iPhone XR. That might be the main reason why the iPhone 11 was the top-selling phone in the world. According to reports, the iPhone 12 price could be even more affordable, which is $649 (around Rs. 47,800) while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will reportedly be retailed at $999 (around Rs. 73,500) and $1,099 (around Rs. 81,000), respectively.
