Once considered futuristic and risky, the foldable phone concept is being adopted by more and more manufacturers. While foldable phones may still remain a concern in the next two or three years, phone makers are trying to work on a model of their own, including Apple. However, Google may beat Apple and launch its own Pixel Fold smartphone.
Since last month, there have been rumors of Google’s foldable phone. Firstly, The Elec, a Korean publication, reported that Google was planning to buy foldable OLED panels from Samsung. And now, we can get the first glimpse at a possible Google Pixel Fold phone though the company hasn’t announced anything.
Designer Waqar Khan released a concept video showing the Pixel 5, which was extrapolated into a believable Pixel Fold design. The back of the phone is the same as that of the Pixel 5, but it features a slimmer screen on the front and unfolds like the Samsung Galaxy Fold. As Google is reported to buy OLED panels from Samsung, a foldable Pixel phone doesn’t seem impossible at all.
Soon after the report from Korea surfaced, Apple leaker Jon Prosser tweeted a direct confirmation saying that the Pixel Fold is real. The tweet also said that the phone will be unveiled in late 2021 or early 2022, meaning it may be launched alongside or in place of the Google Pixel 6.
There’s little to know about the Google Pixel Fold, but according to The Elec, Google asked Samsung to work on a 7.6-inch foldable panel. This size is the same as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2. Maybe by launching a foldable phone, Google can gain back some success after a series of not very successful flagship releases.
