While Google Pixel smartphones have always been known for superior photography power, the upcoming Google Pixel 5 is already facing challenges from competitors, which are closing the gap. The Pixel has got a great reputation thanks to the tech giant’s software-powered computational photography.

Since the launch of the Pixel 4, Korean giant Samsung has released a batch of top camera phones, including the Galaxy S20 Ultra with a 108MP lens as well as 10x lossless zoom, and the Galaxy Note 20. Meanwhile, Apple will likely launch its next-gen iPhone around the same time as the Pixel 5 with several upgrades in the camera.
It remains unclear how Google will respond to these challenges, but one theory suggests that the smartphone may not try to compete with Apple and Samsung in terms of processing power. It may instead focus on improving photography capability, probably with more lenses. So, what do we know so far about the Google Pixel 5?

Google Pixel 5 release date
The search giant has consistently chosen October to launch its flagship phones, such as the Pixel 4 that was debuted on October 15, 2019. Therefore, it’s quite safe to say that the company will announce the Pixel 5 in mid-October.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic is having apparent influences on product assembly in China. As for Apple, the launch of the iPhone 12 may be delayed as factories have been closed and travel has been restricted. Plus, Apple is not the only company to have its devices assembled overseas.
Still, according to a Google blog post, the Pixel 5 could be ready for pre-order as soon as October 8. This might also be the launch date of the phone as pre-orders often go live after its announcement.
Google Pixel 5 price
A Twitter tipster account named Jason C posted on August 12 that Google Pixel 5 XL may be the only variant available, which will come at $699. If that turns out true, Google Pixel 5 price in India will be somewhere around Rs 52,289.

The restriction of variants is possible because of the ongoing pandemic, and choosing to go with the XL version is reasonable as we already have the Pixel 4a for the standard size. Anyway, the handset will likely have a competitive advantage regarding pricing, considering that the Galaxy S20 is $300 (Rs 22,441) more expensive and the Galaxy S20 Ultra is at least $999 (Rs 74,730).
Google Pixel 5 specs
With the reputation of the Google Pixel phones, there have been a lot of Google Pixel 5 leaks months before the official launch.
As of now, there are three potential designs for the next-gen Pixel phones. The first one came out before the device itself gained attention. It showed the same front panel and glass back panel as the Pixel 4 lineup, but a camera module that looked completely different from any module we have seen before. Notably, the there rendered image indicated three camera lenses with an LED flash, which seems likely.
Then, Slashsleaks posted a photo illustrating a smartphone with chunky bezels, suggesting the comeback of Face Unlock, the same feature brought in the Pixel 4.
On the other hand, David Kowalski posted renders in which the Pixel 5 has thin bezels, which means Google might omit motion gesture and face unlocking features.

In terms of the display, initial rumors said that the Google Pixel 5 will sport a Full-HD OLED screen. While the Pixel 4 offered a refresh rate of 90 Hz, its successor could bring a 120Hz rate to match rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S20. There have also been rumors that the next-gen Pixel display will measure 6.67 inches, making it the largest phone ever made by Google.
As for the cameras, the Pixel 5 could have a wide-angle lens, a new addition compared with its predecessor. Besides, a CAD render of the phone indicates three rear cameras and it’s presumed that the wide-angle lens will be added alongside the telephoto and standard lens. The detailed specifications of each lens remain unknown, such as the resolution and video recording ability.

Regarding other specs, the handset will likely be powered by the Snapdragon 865 or the Snapdragon 865+ as previous flagship Pixel phones all featured the best Qualcomm processors. In the worst case, the Pixel 5 will pack the Snapdragon 765G chipset, which is a mid-range chip optimized for gaming power. There’s one more possibility, which is the Snapdragon 768G, an upgraded version of the 765G chipset with a faster GPU and higher clock speed in the CPU.
As for the storage, this isn’t known as a strong point for Google Pixel devices. The Pixel 4 had 4G of RAM and its predecessors came with 6GB RAM. We hope that the Google Pixel 5 will offer at least 8G RAM.
