It appears that foldable phone is the new trend in the smartphone industry and it is taking quite a lot of attention in this year’s MWC. Last week, Samsung fired the first shot by launching its first foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold. And on Sunday, Huawei answered back with its Huawei Mate X. Besides the two giants, TCL which makes smartphones under the brands BlackBerry and Alcatel, teased some concepts of folding phone aimed to offer the device at a more affordable price.

There is a clear advantage of Samsung’s foldable phone over the prototypes that TCL showed to us: The Galaxy Fold is a real thing, and it will be launched on 26 April, while what TCL showed were only concepts that might not even make it to mass production.

The Galaxy Fold features a folding book design with a 7.3-inch foldable display when unfolded and 4.6-inch on the cover when folded in half. It has a total of six cameras on both sides: three on the rear, one on the cover, and two inside. Those cameras are tipped to have similar specifications as the ones on the Galaxy S10.

Samsung will offer the Galaxy Fold via T-Mobile and AT&T from 26 April for $1980 (Rs. 1,40,700). We have to wait until the phone is officially released to see whether it can live up to the hype.

Foldable phone concepts from TCL that might or might not be actual devices

TCL will not launch a foldable phone until next year, but it did show off some interesting concepts of what it would make. TCL didn’t allow any people to have hands-on experience with their concept devices, keeping them behind glass and restricted any taking photos or video recording activities.

As shown in the configuration, the company uses LED lights to display the time instead of a second screen in the cover. Interestingly, TCL also uses magnetic ends to keep the phone closed securely.

The Chinese company also showcased a concept that turns a smartphone into a watch which is dubbed “Dragon Hinge.”

Besides those two concepts, TCL also introduces a narrow and tall phone that is foldable but not really in half. Instead, the phone folds asymmetrically, leaving a small display’s strip exposed to view content and data.

TCL said that it really hopes to launch a foldable device in the upcoming year that comes for 30 percent less than the price tag of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold.
