Samsung has introduced Ocean Mode as a specialized camera tool for select Galaxy phones. It promises better underwater photography through smart software adjustments. Many users wonder if this feature also improves water resistance or turns their device into a truly waterproof gadget.
The short answer is no. Ocean Mode focuses only on image quality and does not change your phone's physical protection against water.

What Exactly Is Ocean Mode?
Ocean Mode is a new option available inside the Expert RAW camera app on compatible Galaxy devices. It uses advanced algorithms to fix common problems that occur when shooting underwater. Water absorbs warmer colors like reds and oranges while scattering light, which often leaves photos looking dull, blue-tinted, or distorted.
Ocean Mode automatically corrects color balance, reduces motion blur from currents or movement, and includes an interval shooting timer that captures photos every two, five, or ten seconds.
The feature was first developed by Samsung in partnership with the nonprofit Seatrees for coral reef restoration projects. Samsung later made Ocean Mode available to regular users starting with the Galaxy S26 series and rolling it out to models like the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 7 through Expert RAW updates.
How to Activate Ocean Mode on Your Galaxy Phone
To use it, open the main Camera app, tap More, and launch Expert RAW (download it from the Galaxy Store if needed). Once inside Expert RAW, look for the beaker icon or Labs section and select Ocean Mode.
A clear warning message appears every time you turn it on. Samsung states directly: "Ocean mode does not make your phone waterproof."
The mode works best when used together with a dedicated underwater case, especially in oceans or saltwater environments.
Why Ocean Mode Does Not Make Your Phone Waterproof
Galaxy phones have strong water resistance ratings, typically IP68 on flagship S series models. This rating means they can handle submersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for about 30 minutes under lab conditions.
However, these ratings apply only to fresh water. Saltwater, chlorine from pools, or prolonged exposure can damage the phone over time. Ocean Mode is purely a software feature. It only adjusts camera settings for better photos and adds no physical protection or improved sealing.
For safe underwater use, especially in the ocean, always place your phone inside a proper waterproof housing designed for diving or snorkeling.
Who Benefits Most From Ocean Mode?
Casual snorkelers, vacationers, and underwater enthusiasts gain the most from this feature. With a good case, anyone can now take vivid, color-accurate photos and videos of marine life without needing extra editing.
Marine researchers and conservation groups also use it for their work.
Key Limitations
- Available only on high-end models such as the Galaxy S25 Ultra, S26 series, and Z Fold 7.
- Requires the latest version of the Expert RAW app.
- It is not a replacement for a proper waterproof case.
- Even with a case, caution is still advised with saltwater.
The Bottom Line
Samsung Ocean Mode is a useful camera enhancement that delivers clearer and more lifelike underwater photos on Galaxy phones. However, it does not make your phone waterproof. Your Galaxy remains water-resistant as before, not waterproof.
