China Beats The US Regarding The Number Of Supercomputers

According to a report, China houses 219 of global supercomputers while the US holds 116. However, the US still holds the two most powerful ones.

According to Top500’s latest report, China houses 219 of global supercomputers; meanwhile, the US holds 116. However, the US is home to IBM's Sierra and Summit by IBM – the two supercomputers which are the highest-powered.

Supercomputers are enormous computing machines that are used for some programs which are power-intensive such as quantum physics, aircraft and engines design, climate change influences forecast, previous nuclear weapons examination, and reconstruction of the universe’s history.

Top500 said that petaflop systems have entered the list for the first time. It ranks the world's highest-performing computer systems twice every year.

China’s supercomputers were ranked the 3rd and 4th positions in the list of the most powerful ones. It is thanks to its Sunway TaihuLight by China's National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology together with Tianhe-2A which is known as Milky Way-2A by China's National University of Defense Technology.

At the 5th place belongs to the US with Dell's Frontera in Texas, which is also the newest to make to the top 10. Other countries in the top 10 include Germany, Japan, and Switzerland.

Amongst the top 500 supercomputers all around the world, Japan has 29, France has 19, the UK has 18, Germany has 14, Netherland, as well as Ireland, has 13, Canada has 8, and Singapore has 5.

Nowadays, Intel provides processors for 96 percent of the world's supercomputers, said Top500.

On the other hand, Shoubu system B of Japan was considered the most power-efficient when talking about "green" supercomputers.

It is expected that the fastest supercomputer will appear in the United State in 2021 as a modern entrant named Frontier which is priced at $600 million with AMD and Cray technology. Frontier will be able to do 1.5 quintillion calculations each second. This is the 1.5-exaflop level which can assert the performance crown, according to the US Energy Department’s announcement in May.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise then announced to have the plan of acquiring Cray and consolidating their power.

Among supercomputers on the list, Cray is behind 39; on the other hand, HPE is responsible for 40. Thus, if they are combined, Insur – the 2nd placed maker with 71 supercomputers would be defeated. However, they could not outnumber Lenovo – the 1st placed maker with 173.

On 17th June, the supercomputer DGX SuperPOD, which is expected to be the twenty-second fastest globally, was unveiled by Nvidia. This will serve in training the algorithms as well as neural networks which are used to develop autonomous vehicles.
