As a world-class cyber warfare team, the country hopes to enhance its protection of data from worldwide hackers.

Russia will apparently experience a day without the Internet in the coming time after someone has made its senior officials unsatisfactory. Don’t take it seriously! In fact, the country has planned to do a security exercise by disconnecting itself from the WWW or World Wide Web.

According to ZDNet, the local Russian media revealed that the action belongs to a mandatory program called Digital Economy National Program. Proposed by President Vladimir Putin, this law was first uncovered at the beginning of 2018 with the aim to set up a local network for the country, which enables its citizens to uses the domestic connectivity instead of the current global connectivity.

In other words, the government hopes the ability to access the Internet won’t be affected even when any foreign country leverages cyber-attacks to unplug the connectivity of Russia.

The network disconnectivity may take place before the first day of April, and Russia will allegedly run a test on Runet. At that time, to keep operating, all of the Internet traffic in the country will be routed via the points which are controlled by the government and gain the approval from Roskomnadzor, a telecommunications watchdog.

During the test, Internet traffic, as well as a series of companies’ profits will be affected; however, they have no other choice but agree. Also according to the latest revelation, next year, the country will localise the national Internet completely by its own domain name system or DNS that has been developed since 5 years ago. This DNS will enable Russia’s citizens to access sites without moving through the foreign servers, and reduce the intervention of data from outsides.

It is not difficult to comprehend Russia’s move. First, as a world-class cyber warfare team, the country hopes to enhance its protection of data from worldwide hackers. Second, the countless retaliatory attacks are also one of the most notable dangers Russia have faced. Therefore, establishing separate connectivity like Runet is extremely necessary.
