Qualcomm Inc has always been one of the leading companies in manufacturing electronic components and especially mobile phone chips. The San Diego, USA-based company is currently developing an artificial intelligence integration chip to operate in data storage centers with thousands of servers.

In the context of AI development, Qualcomm said it plans to test its new Cloud AI 100 chip and it will show that the company will grow to data centers instead of focusing on mobile chips. In data centers, electricity will provide enough power for these chips to operate at full capacity and achieve high efficiency when electricity has always been a major obstacle in mobile devices. However, the supply of sufficient electricity will require the ability to discharge heat well, otherwise, the computer will be damaged.
Qualcomm is turning its expertise in low-power mobile designs to the data center service.
Keith Kressin, Qualcomm's senior vice president, said that in terms of each watt, 100-chip AI Cloud can operate 10 times faster than current technology.
If it is as expected, Qualcomm will launch this product in 2020 and it will make AI operations faster, more efficient and more widely used. Face recognition, translation, medical analysis and other technology using neural networks can all be upgraded and perform much better.
Of course, it is not just Qualcomm embarking on the development and upgrading of its own AI chip. From small startups or large-scale companies like Apple are focusing on making their own customized AI chips.
David Kanter, an analyst with Real World Technologies, said Qualcomm must prove its value through the energy efficiency and price of its AI chip.
