Google has integrated a load of motion-sensing Soli chips into its latest smartphone models - Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, meaning that the duo will be the few smartphones owning an inbuilt radar until now. The company added that the new improvement will carry out the “fastest secure face unlock” all over the industry right now, as well as a bunch of most-leaked “Motion Sense” gestures. For instance, when you walk away, it will power down automatically and once you saunter back over, it’ll switch on instead. In addition, you can make a quick wave to change a music track or silence incoming calls on your home screen.
Jaime Lien and Leonardo Giusti from Google have shown us how the sensor works in a short video at the stage. In particular, you can change the morning alarm through simple gestures. The alarm will slowly decrease the volume if you reach down for your phone. In case the phone is nearby, you can dismiss your alarm with just a horizontal wave.
Gestures with Motion Sense will be optional. For those who focus on privacy, all the Soli-generated data will be processed locally on the phone, instead of through the cloud. From that, it won’t be available on any other Google service.
Given that air-based gestures are amazing, but the idea of such controls isn't something unfamiliar. Back in April 2013, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S4 which boasted of similar supports, allowing us to remote web pages, music playback and even accept a call without any touch. However, it appeared to be a gimmick then the company abandoned it. As for Google, the tech giant has put a lot of expectations on Motion Sense.
