Google Reportedly Limits Its Sharing Of Android Data Over Privacy Concerns

Google stopped the Mobile Network Insights service that provided data on connection speeds and signal strengths connection for wireless carriers.

It’s obvious that Google is tightening its grips on certain parts of Android data. The tech giant stopped the Mobile Network Insights service that provided data on connection speeds as well as signal strengths connection for wireless carriers within the areas they cover, Reuters reported.

In addition, Google made the decision to shut down the program due to concerns that sharing the data could lead to further scrutiny from regulators as well as users.

On Monday, the search giant confirmed that it killed the program; however, it did not reveal further details.

Also on that day, a spokesperson said in his emailed statement that the company developed a program for helping moble partners with improving their networks by using anonymized and aggregated performance metrics. But it ended it as the product priorities have changed. Also, the company still committed to enhancing network performance in its services and apps.

In recent months, Google, along with several tech giants, have been under escalated scrutiny over the way they handle user data and potentially anti-competitive practices as well. Back in 2018, the company faced backlash for collecting users’ location data even if they have turned off location services. Since then, Google has rolled out an autodelete feature for web history, app, and location.

Not only Google, but Facebook is also under scrutiny for its data collection, which has been going on for years. Weeks ago, the social giant faced a $5 billion fine in a settlement with the FTC. The fine, while setting a new record for an amount imposed on a tech company, was just a drop in the bucket for Facebook.
