Google has made an announcement on its new undersea internet cable that will connect Europe with Africa. The third cable route has an end in Portugal. It is expected to link to Morocco, and prolong to South Africa from the African coast, with many stop points in various countries.
Google calls the cable “Equiano”, which originates from the name of Olaudah Equiano, an abolitionist and writer from Nigeria. The portion connecting Portugal and South Africa will be operated in the next two years, in 2021.
On its blog post, it said,
According to the company’s statement, Google has invested 47 billion dollars for the recent 03 years to finish the tech infrastructure. In terms of the Equiano cable project, the cable route holds the 14th position in the cable projects the tech giant has an involvement. Also, it is the 3rd private global cable project of the company.
The two previous projects include Curie built in April, connecting Los Angeles and Chile, and Dunant which will link the United States and France. The second cable route is 6,600 km long and expected to go into operation in 2020. These cables will ensure stable connectivity because they carry about 99% of the data traffic in the world.
Back to the third cable route, Alcatel Submarine Networks will be responsible for installing Equiano. Google wrote a blog post,
