After many long waits, Google Family Link app is now available in India, which allows parents to monitor their children's mobile phone usage.

Google’s parental control software for mobile devices has officially been launched in India. Initially, only in select countries were the Family Link services available. With this service, parents are given control of their child’s smartphone usage.

In order for Family Link to work, a parent needs to set up an e-mail for their child. The child needs to be under 13, but this can vary depending on each country.

After creating an email, parents will have to install Family Link on to both their phone and their child’s device. Once they add the account to the Family Link, different control methods can be carried out. A parent can set a time limit on each application as well as the total allowed screen time. When the child wants to make any app purchases, parents will have the ability to approve or disapprove it.

Moreover, parents will also be able to remotely lock their child’s phone. Children will also be given a choice to opt out of regulation; however, this will come with terms and conditions. Parents will be notified about this first. If they don’t approve, the device will be temporarily locked until children accept the supervision.

While the app does provide parents with the power to monitor their children’s mobile phone usage, it does not mean parents have absolute control. For example, they won’t be able to remotely reset passwords, format the device or see what on their children’s phone screens.

Google is trying to help people getting rid of digital addiction. They have already put time limits on its YouTube app. Family Link will also work on Chromebook devices. Apple is also working on introducing better parental control on their devices. In iOS 12, Apple added in Screen Time feature permitting users to track own usage. However, this hasn’t done much on controlling the usage time of kids.

Soon enough, the devices which are connected to the Family Link service would also work with Google Assistant.
