On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that though nothing is certain yet, Facebook think the criminals behind the massive hack last month are spammers who pretend to be a digital marketing company.
Since Septemebr 25, there has been an investigation into the biggest security scandal of Facebook's history. It was suspected that 50 million users was hacked, but the social giant confirmed that 29 million users were stolen of their data, including email addresses and phone numbers.
The security breached resulted from a vulnerability in “view as” feature on Facebook, which allows users to look at their profiles as another user. The attackers exploited the feature and stole “access tokens” which could be used to take over accounts of users. They also stole tokens from their victims’ friends, increasing the number of people affected.
Facebook has claimed that it is cooperating with the FBI, which required it not talking about who conducted the attack or if they aimed at anyone. However, it’s stated that the attack had nothing to do with the US midterm elections which is coming close.
Facebook refused to make any comments on the attack, stressing Guy Rosen’s Friday comment again.
The vice president of product management said “We are cooperating with the FBI on this matter." He emphasized that the FBI is working on their investigation and no discuss to be made about who stands behind the hack.
