Apple’s Security Chief Bribed Police 200 iPads For Gun Permits

Thomas Moyer, Apple’s global security chief, has been accused of bribing Santa Clara County police for gun permits for the security team of Apple. Moyer allegedly promised to send to the sheriff’s office 200 iPads worth around $70,000 to have four gun licenses, according to Jeff Rosen, the Santa Clara District Attorney.

The investigation has been going on for nearly two years. The goal of the investigation is to find out if the Santa Clara sheriff takes political donations and bribes in exchange for concealed carry permits. The office of the sheriff is in Cupertino, California. This is also where the headquarters of Apple is located.

The District Attorney of Santa Clara states that people receiving concealed carry licenses in the state need to have good cause. They are also required to have a good moral character as well as completing a firearms course. The final say in selecting the qualified people belongs to the sheriff.

In a statement, Ed Swanson, Moyer’s lawyer, said that Tom Moyer was not guilty as he was only the victim of a dispute between the county police and the District Attorney.

It is alleged that officials working in the office of the Santa Clara Country Sheriff, Undersheriff Rick Sung, along with Captain James Jensen, were also a part of a scheme. They also received bribes from people who applied for concealed carry permits.

Moyer, a Navy veteran, has worked for Apple for 14 years. He became the global security chief at the end of 2018. With this position, Moyer’s responsibilities include preventing information from being leaked out.
