If You Want A Group Selfie Amid The COVID-19 Pandemic, Ask Apple Because...It Owns A Patent For That

The COVID-19 pandemic is still going on, restricting us from normal activities, like gatherings and taking group selfies. However, a new patent by Apple will help us solve this problem once and for all by letting us take a group selfie even if we are 2 meters apart.

The Verge and Patently Apple reported that Apple has secured a patent for “synthetic group selfies” so that users can snap a photo together without having to be together physically. This initiative sounds perfect, especially when you want to take a picture with friends at different locations.

It can be seen in the patent application that users can invite other people to a group selfie and the software would put together their individual photos into one image. The same process would work for recording a video as well as live streaming images.

All users invited in the group selfie could choose to keep the original and the group photo. They could also adjust the image as they want using the editing features of the software. For instance, if you think someone was stealing your spotlight in the group photo, you can switch them to the background and yourself to the front and center.

It’s not shown in the patent which Apple devices would carry this feature, but it will likely come to the iPhone, or iPad, or both. The tech giant originally filed the patent in 2018, long before the COVID-19 pandemic happened and before the world even had an idea of social distancing.

Of course, as usual, a patent doesn’t mean new technology is coming. But if and when it does, we don’t want to wait to get our hands on it.
