An Apple employee working in Cork, Ireland was tested positive for COVID-19, as state by the company on Tuesday. This is by far the first case of getting the Coronavirus of the iPhone maker.
Apple said that the employee had been confirmed to carry the Coronavirus. The company ensures that it was working with the local authorities and the employee was in stable condition under self-quarantine at home. As a precaution measure, some of other employees have been asked to stay at home while the Health and Safety Executive evaluates the situation.
The company also shared that they would clean their stores and offices as well as taking all of the needed preventative measures required by the local health authorities.
Back in its headquarter in Cupertino, California, Apple has asked all of its staff to work from home if their positions allow it.
As of March 5, the Santa Clara County where Apple Park located has confirmed 20 cases of COVID-19. The county officials later advised Apple to find measures to limit contact. Apple has 12,000 employees working at the Apple Park offices.
Apple’s staff in Seattle has also been required to work remotely. However, a company’s spokesperson said that Apple Stores in Santa Clara will remain open until further notice.
On the 28th of February, Google said that one of its employees in Zurich, Germany had been tested positive for COVID-19. After they have their first cases of contracting the Coronavirus, Microsoft and Amazon have also asked their employees to work from home.
Microsoft, aware of how the working-from-home policy can affect hourly workers who provide services for its employees, announced that they would keep paying them despite the fact that their service is temporarily not needed.
