Last year we saw Sony comeback with the high-end Xperia 1 and a new design language. Almost a year has passed since the launch of the flagship, users and especially Sony fans are looking forward to a new smartphone that can succeed the Xperia 1. Recently, a series of new leaked images of a high-end Sony smartphone has been shared online, showing that Sony is preparing to launch a new smartphone at the upcoming MWC 2020 event and it is likely to be called Xperia 1.1 or Xperia 5 Plus.
New render images reveal that Xperia 5 Plus will still have the same design language as last year's Xperia 1, but there are some notable changes. The most noticeable one is that the new Sony smartphone will now have an ultra-thin screen bezel on all sides. The top and bottom bezels are relatively thicker but have been significantly improved compared to the Xperia 1. This screen is rumored to be a 6.6-inch OLED panel, which is larger than its predecessor. The display will still have a tall aspect ratio of 21: 9.
Around the back, the rear camera module has also been moved to the upper left corner. This triple-camera cluster will include a main sensor, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto camera. To be able to compete with high-end smartphones on the market, Sony also integrated an additional 3D ToF sensor for portrait photography.
According to the source, the overall size of the Xperia 5 Plus will be 168.2 x 71.6 x 8.1mm, not much larger than its predecessor (167 x 72 x 8.2 mm).
Notably, the renders also show that Sony will likely bring back the 3.5mm headphone jack. According to a 360-degree video shared by @OnLeaks, the headphone jack will be placed on the top edge of the device.
On the left side, we will still have a fingerprint sensor mounted on the power button, accompanied by a volume rocker as well as a dedicated camera button. The USB-C charging port and microphone will be located at the bottom.
In terms of hardware configuration, the Xperia 1.1 will be equipped with a Snapdragon 865 chipset, support 5G connectivity. It will also pack at least 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, and Android 10 out of the box.
Sony is expected to introduce the Xperia 1.1 or Xperia 5 Plus at the MWC 2020 event in late February, a few weeks after Samsung announced the new Galaxy S20 series at the Unpacked Galaxy event on 11 February. And if the brand still follows the same time frame as the Xperia 1, you have to wait until May or June to be able to purchase the Xperia 1.1 (or Xperia 5 Plus).
