Upcoming Honor Magic 2 Comes With 3D Face Unlock Feature

Huawei's sub-brand Honor is set to launch a new 3D model of its Honor Magic 2 with a “structured light” 3D scanner for Facial Recognition feature.

The new sliding smartphone was initially launched last year in October and the unique camera design helped it stood out amongst those devices. Magic 2’s sliding mechanism allows it to utilize the triple camera setup on the front of the device and have a full-screen design as well as minimal bezels at the same time. Despite the handset’s delicate look in the picture above, the device is powered by HiSilicon’s Kirin 980 chipset, and packed with the options of 6GB or 8GB of RAM.

According to a Weibo post, Honor is currently preparing to introduce a new “3D” variant of the device. The new “3D” device had been teased during the released of the main device.  It was hinted that the “3D” handset would feature a “structured light” 3D scanner locating alongside the triple-cameras-setup, which are one main 16MP camera, and two more 2MP-cameras. The 3D scanner will serve as the face unlock which is able to scan approximately 10,000 points on the user’s face. The feature is said to operate in the dark as well in order to secure the facial recognition program, which can be seen in China’s AliPay.

As mentioned above, the device is packed with HiSilicon’s Kirin 980, 2 options of 6GB and 8Gb of RAM, and 512GB memory, however, the device does not feature a microSD card slot. In addition, the device has a 6.4-inch OLED display which comes with a Full HD 2280x1080 pixels resolution and a 19:9 aspect ratio. The handset is amongst the few that does not feature a notch, however, the device possesses an edge to edge display design. As for the main camera on the back, the device comes with a triple camera setup which includes a 16MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, a 16MP wide-angle lens, and a 24MP monochrome. The device is speculated to cost around 5,799 in Chinese Yuan.
