Sony Xperia 1 With 21:9 Cinema-Wide Display & Snapdragon 855 Launched

Alongside three budget and mid-range phones, Sony also announced its new flagship called Xperia 1 with a Snapdragon 855 SoC and 21:9 Cinema-Wide Display.

Sony was the first phone maker to start the MWC 2019 event with its release event today. In the event, the Japanese phone maker announced four new additions to its mobile portfolio, one of which is a flagship smartphone while the other three are budget and mid-range devices. The flagship device is launched under the name Sony Xperia 1, which was previously tipped to be Sony XZ4 and Xperia XZ3’s successor. The Xperia 1 is the world’s first smartphone to come with a Cinema Wide 4K HDR display with a 21:9 aspect ratio and also the first Sony phone to come with a triple rear camera setup.

Sony didn’t reveal the exact pricing of the Xperia, but the phone maker did say that the phone will be up for sale in Spring.

The Sony Xperia 1 is the latest Sony flagship coming to the market, and it is the first phone in the world to have a display with a 21:9 aspect ratio. It sports an impressive 6.5-inch Cinema Wide OLED panel with a 4K resolution and support for HDR. The Xperia 1’s display is also supported by the company’s BRAVIA X1 mobile engine for more natural colors and deeper black. It got IP68 certification and further protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on both sides.

Moving to the performance, the Xperia X1 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 855 SoC, coupled with 6GB RAM/128GB storage which is expandable up to 512GB via a microSD slot. In terms of software, the handset will run the latest Android 9 Pie at launch.

In the imaging department, as mentioned, the Xperia 1 is Sony’s first smartphone to sport a triple rear camera setup. The setup includes a 12MP main RGB camera, a 12MP secondary camera with a wide-angle lens, and a 12MP third camera with a telephoto lens and OIS support. The rear camera setup is also further supported by the Dual-Pixel tech, which is claimed to take good photos of moving objects in both day-light and low-light conditions. Other features for the camera include Cinema Pro for taking professional videos, recording super slow-mo videos in FHD resolution. You can also capture a 4K HDR video at 24 fps in a 21:9 widescreen cinematic format. On the front, it sports a single 8MP selfie camera for taking selfies and video calling. Under the hood, it is backed by a 3,300 mAh battery with support for fast charging.
