Xiaomi just launched the budget Redmi 7A in its home market China. As you can tell by the name, the device is launched as the direct successor to last year’s Redmi 6A. If Xiaomi brings the phone to India, it will likely compete against the newly-announced Realme C2. Both of the Redmi 6A and 7A are meant for people who are looking for an upgrade to their feature phones. Let’s see what are the differences between the two smartphones and see if the Redmi 7A is truly the successor to the Redmi 6A.
Redmi 7A vs Redmi 6A: Availability & Price
The Redmi 6A is available in Black, Rose Gold, Blue, and Gold color variants while the Redmi 7A is offered in only two colors variants, including Black and Blue. In terms of price, the company hasn’t revealed the exact pricing of the new Redmi offering. However, the Redmi 5A and Redmi 6A were both priced at Rs. 5,999 in India, so we believe that the Redmi 7A will come with a similar price tag. Xiaomi will reveal its price on 28 May in China, which is the same date as the Redmi K20 series launch event.
Redmi 7A vs Redmi 6A: Display & Design
The Redmi 6A and 7A share a similar design, and both of them feature an aspect ratio of 18:9. Both of them have sizeable bezels on both the top and bottom sides. However, the two phones still differ in some way. For example, the speaker of the Redmi 7A is placed at the bottom side instead of being at the back like the Redmi 6A. Moreover, the new phone also comes with a polycarbonate chassis and P2i nano-coating for water resistance.
On the back, while the Redmi 6A has a horizontally-stacked camera setup, the 7A features a camera module placed vertically. In terms of display, both of them sport a 5.45-inch HD+ display with 1,440 x 720p resolution.
Redmi 7A vs Redmi 6A: Specification, Battery & Software
The Redmi 7A runs on a Snapdragon 439 octa-core processor while the Redmi 6A is powered by an Helio P22 quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM + 16GB storage or 2GB of RAM + 32GB of storage. The memory configurations of the 7A remain unknown for now. However, the company revealed that the phone will have a microSD slot for expanding storage up to 256GB.
As for the battery, the phone is fueled by a 4,000 mAh battery while its predecessor is powered by a much smaller 3,000 mAh battery. With that large battery and the energy-efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 chipset, the Redmi 7A will offer much much better battery life compared to the Redmi 6A.
As for software, the Redmi 7A boots Android 9.0 Pie at launch with Xiaomi’s MIUI 10 on top while the Redmi 6A runs MIUI 9 which is based on the dated Android 9.1 Oreo.
Redmi 7A vs Redmi 6A: Camera
Both of the budget Redmi handsets feature the same cameras on both front and back. On the rear, they have a single 13MP camera while there is a 5MP selfie camera up front. The cameras on the Redmi 7A is further supported by a single LED flash and some AI features like AI beauty, AI background blur, and PDAF. Meanwhile, the Redmi 6A’s cameras have support for EIS and an LED flash as well. For now, Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed whether the Redmi 7A will support EIS or not.
