This fall, we will see the release of Google’s greatest handheld device of 2019. So far, we have had a slew of leaked as well as official information from the company about the Pixel 4 and 4 XL.
With the available renders, we have a pretty clear idea of what to expect in these two models. So here are every leaks, rumor, and tidbit we have heard:
Release Date And Availability
Just like their predecessors, we may expect to see the launch of Pixel 4 and 4 XL in October in some regions. The public may get their hands on these devices a few weeks after Google’s #MadeByGoogle event.
Specifications
While we have seen most of what to expect in the appearance, the internal hardware is still somewhat a mystery. No one can be sure of whether Google will make use of the Snapdragon 855+ instead of the still competent 855. Pixel 3 is fine with the non-plus variant of the chipset, but since it features only 4GB of RAM, users expect a bit more from Google this year.
Rumor has it that 2019’s Pixel will see a boost of RAM to 6GB. While this is incomparable to other smartphones like Galaxy S10 or OnePlus 7 Pro, Google seems to focus more on optimizing the RAM rather than squeezing in as much as possible. 6GB should give users a significant change in multitasking.
Many users are not so pleased with the maximum of 128GB of Pixel 3, so this year, many expect another boost in onboard storage too, to 256GB for example.
Google has not released any information on the capacity of the battery, but we can be sure that we will see the return of wireless charging. The glass back means that the device will be compatible with Pixel Stand.
For software, rumor has it that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will run on Android Q.
Camera
Google has told us a little bit about the two phones’ camera setup, making this the most credible piece of information we have so far.
On the rear, we will have a square module where two cameras poke. As Google aims at competing with Huawei P30 Pro and the like, users can expect lots of flexibilities and abilities.
From the hints leakers found in Google Camera app code, the 16-megapixel telephoto zoom lens will make its appearance on this year Pixel 4 and 4 XL. The other one is probably the standard. With what the Pixel 3 has done, the cameras of Pixel 4 is projected to be one of the best on the market.
From the teaser video Google posted themselves, Pixel 4 will not feature a dual front-facing camera setup, but the tech it contains can definitely make up for that.
We cannot exclude the Night Sight when talking about Pixel 4’s cameras. While last year’s version was overshadowed by Huawei P30 Pro, this year, Google may introduce a boost in performance to regain users’ interest.
Design And Device Features
With all of the leaks and renders released so far, we can be sure that users will see a triple camera bump on the rear.
Ever since Google posted official renders of Pixel 4 on Twitter, people have been talking about a possible Face ID-like function, especially when the company has proudly introduced their face-scanning tech. However, only time can tell if Google’s version of this kind of authentication is as consistent and accurate as of that of Apple.
Another blog post reveals a wide range of other details besides the face unlock. Do you remember Project Soli? This year, the research has proven to be fruitful as it has given the Pixel 4 and 4 XL a function called Motion Sensing, meaning users can do tasks like silencing phone calls, skipping songs, and snoozing alarm just by some simple hand gestures.
The Soli chip will use radars to map users’ hand movements, which will likely need the approval of the authority. So for countries that the government does not allow this technology, users may not be able to experience this cool function.
In the top bezel, apart from the Soli chip, we will probably see the arrival of two Face Unlock IR cameras, the Soli chip, substantial earpiece, ambient light/proximity sensor, solo front-facing selfie camera, face unlock flood illuminator, and a face unlock dot projector.
Colors
For now, only two color variants of Pixel 4 and 4 XL are revealed, which are black and white.
Display
For people who dislike the notch, a good piece of news is that Pixel 4 and 4 XL feature none of it, but instead, users will see a large top bezel, packing with new tech, of course, so no complaint here.
Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL share the same QHD+ resolution, but the former will feature a 5.8-inch display, while that of the latter is bumped to 6.4 inches. This year, many users expect that the color-shifting issue will be fixed.
There are rumors saying that besides the face unlock, we will also see an in-display fingerprint sensor. While if this is true, it will be a neat combination, but since Google has not said anything about a second authenticating method, you had better wait until the official launch to confirm this information.
Pixel 4 and 4 XL pricing
So far, we have not heard anything about the expected price of the Pixel 4 and 4 XL.
