Since January, there have been rumors around Motorola’s making a foldable Razr phone and there’re no signs this will stop anytime soon. For instance, last week, the phone was rumored to launch in the US market in the next few months and will come to Europe this December, according to Let’s Go Digital.
The Razr is not likely to carry the same power and premium features as other foldable smartphones like Huawei Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold, but that doesn’t mean we cannot be excited about this upcoming device.
Motorola hasn’t launched the phone yet nor has it commented on its folding design, availability, or price. The phone maker says that it will only confirm or deny rumors around products.
Regardless, the Razr is still among the most expected smartphones to join the segment. While the Razr came out 15 years ago, the phone maintains its brand and name recognition.
And now, here’s all we know about the foldable Razr as of now.
Razr patent shows an iconic design with a foldable screen
In January, the Wall Street Journal reported that Motorola was reviving its Razr brand by launching a new phone. Later, through a patent filing shared by 91Mobiles, we got a glimpse of what the new Razr phone might look like.
According to the illustrations, the phone’s design is similar to the original phone but its screen now spreads all over its interior. Apparently, the screen should be flexible so that it can be folded in half and its curved bulge would be hidden in the phone’s body when closed.
If the phone turns out exactly like this, Motorola seems to take a more practical approach compared with Huawei and Samsung. Rather than unfolding the phone into a tablet, the Razr will fit your pocket.
Though rumors said that the company would announce the smartphone in April, nothing happened except for some leaked images, which indicate a handset with Motorola’s logo as well as a long screen. In another image, the phone is folded at 90 degrees.
Midrange price
Also in the January report, The Wall Street Journal said that the phone’s price could be Rs 107,318, higher than most premium phones such as Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus and the iPhone XS Max.
But its foldable rivals cost Rs 186,017 (the Mate X) and Rs 141,659 (Galaxy Fold), so the Razr seems reasonable for its kind. Also, with the leaked specifications, this device is likely to be a midrange foldable phone rather than a high-end one. Meanwhile, another report said the phone would cost Rs 119,007.
Leaked specifications of Razr foldable phone
Back in March, XDA Developers posted several leaked specs and features of Motorola’s foldable handset. Accordingly, the phone will sport a 6.2-inch display with a resolution of 2,142x876 pixels. It will pack the Sandargon 710, featuring 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of internal storage. In addition, the device will house a 2,730mAh battery and could be available in Gold, Black, and White color options.
It’s worth noting that the original Razr’s screen measures 2.2 inches only, meaning the new 6.2-inch screen will well please those who want larger screen packed in a small body. The choice of chips is intriguing too as Motorola seems to bypass the Snapdragon 855 which powers that Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and Samsung Galaxy A8. Let’s see how the company optimizes features for this chip.
The Razr may come with useful software features
One feature XDA Developers previously leaked was that the main screen can double as a trackpad in its unfolding stage. This ability is like the One Button Nav Motorola gave to some of its phones such as the Moto G5 Plus that used the fingerprint scanner as a trackpad instead of the display.
Similar to the original Razr, this phone’s exterior may include a display which may offer greater functionality especially regarding several Motorola apps like Moto Actions, Moto Camera, and Moto Display. The company currently uses a skinned Android version of its handsets with similar shortcuts.
Additionally, rumors suggest that Razr foldable phone will come with Google Assistant, with a dedicated feature to trigger it once the device is closed. This is important as having the ability to access the handset using voice command can help solve certain UI issues.
