iPhone 12 Case: Do You Need One If Apple Said The Phone Is Tougher Than Its Competitors?

Apple’s big claim has made many users wondering whether an iPhone 12 case is needed this time

Gorilla Glass is arguably the most well-known name when it comes to phone screens. We also see it on Apple’s latest handset released recently. However, Apple’s big claim has made many users wondering whether an iPhone 12 case is needed this time.

The new cover of iPhones is called Corning Ceramic Shield and according to Apple, it’s tougher than the toughest glass Corning has – the Gorilla Glass Victus, which is protecting phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Now let’s see what the difference between the two screens and whether investing in an iPhone 12 case is a wise choice.

Glass-Ceramic vs. Glass: Two Different Materials

The most obvious distinction between Gorilla Glass Victus and Ceramic Shield is the material – glass and ceramic.

Glass is noncrystalline, meaning its atoms don’t have any particular order or structure. The material is often transparent. On the other hand, ceramic is a superheated glass that has an order. It’s usually opaque.

When it comes to durability, ceramic is the outright winner. It’s definitely tougher than glass and the majority of metals. This is why Huawei, Samsung, and some other phone manufacturers cover the back of their phones with this material.

With that being said, you might think there is no need for an iPhone 12 case if the phone is this tough. However, it isn’t the case. Read on to find out why.

Gorilla Glass has been modified to boost its resistance to scratches and drops. iPhone 12 uses glass-ceramic, a completely new material.

Unlike other ceramics, the one on iPhone 12 is randomly oriented. The crystals are also smaller than light wavelength, meaning it’s transparent, not opaque.

Which Is More Durable?

According to Corning, Gorilla Glass Victus can survive a fall from a 1.8-meter height. However, the manufacturers’ choice of design can greatly change the durability. In a drop test of the Note 20 Ultra, the display didn’t survive a 1.8-meter fall.

Apple has said nothing about the height and whether users should opt for an iPhone 12 case but it did say the Ceramic Shield is four times as tough as its processor.

The new design of the iPhone 12 might facilitate durability as the phone lies flat on a surface, not bulging like other curved-screen phones. So it’s highly likely that it would be more durable than both last year’s iPhone 11 and Samsung’s flagship smartphones.

What About Scratch Resistance?

Corning’s process to toughen up glass is called ion exchange. While the treatment ensures scratch and drops resistance, to which degree the glass can endure outside forces depends on the version.

Corning said its Gorilla Glass Victus is four times better at scratch resistance than other competitors on the market and five times more durable than Gorilla Glass 5.

Since we have had no tests with iPhone 12’s Ceramic Shield, it’s hard to compare the two.

In a scratch test, the Note 20 Ultra came out intact when being put in the same bag with keys, pens, and coins, speaking volume of how durable it is.

On the back, Apple’s latest phones are covered by the same material as the iPhone 11 so you will probably need an iPhone 12 case.

Which Is Easier To See?

Ceramic Shield has been engineered to be transparent despite its ceramic nature but we haven’t had the chance to compare it against the Victus to see which one triumphs when it comes to reflectiveness and transparency.

What we are sure of at this point is Ceramic Shield is color-free, much like normal glass.

Apple has its own line of accessories which you might want to take a look at. What they have and their competitors don’t is MagSafe support, which we have already known about through iPhone 12 case leak.

A Tough Call...

The new Ceramic Shield and the flush edge design on the iPhone 12 lineup make it the winner, at least over earlier iPhones when it comes to durability.

However, we will have to wait for drop tests to know whether the new material is tougher than Gorilla Glass Victus on other flagship phones on the market.

Scratch tests are also needed to determine how durable the Ceramic Shield is in scratch resistance.

Another pressing question is if the ceramic is as transparent as normal glass.

So for now, if you are having an iPhone 12 case in mind, wait until you get your device and proper tests are out to see if it’s a necessary accessory.

Either way, iPhone 12 case Amazon is abundant in number so you will definitely find the one that catches your eyes.
