Instagram Now Allows Up To 6 People In A Group Video Call

In June 2018, Instagram announced its support for video chat through its direct messaging app. It initially only allowed four people in a video chat. Instagram users can now create a 6 people video conversation in Instagram

 It initially only allowed four people in a video chat but, it has now been expanded to six people. With this update to the group video calling of Instagram, a sing call can now be joined by a maximum of six people instead of four people previously.

You can still minimize a group video call and do other things in the app, and calls can be initiated easily within the Instagram app. The 6 people upgrade of Group video call was spotted in the support page of Instagram.

To initiate a group video chat, in the top right of Feed, hit  . You can initiate a new conversation by either opening a current conversation or starting a new one by hitting  in the top right corner and then selecting people you would like to video chat with. After that, hit  in the top right corner and it will notify people or group that you want to video chat with them.

Please note that any person can initiate a video call if you previously accepted their direct message. Therefore, if you do not want to video chat with them, you can either block or mute your conversation with them.

If you want to add more than 6 people in your video call, then you can use Facebook Messenger which has already allowed up to 50 people in a single video chat since Dec 2016. In the meantime, Apple is also testing group video call feature in its FaceTime with iOS 12.1.

The Group feature of FaceTime will allow users to create a video chat with a maximum of 32 people. The feature was delayed to the end of the beta testing process instead of being included with iOS 12. This feature is now available in iOS 12.1.
