Huawei VP Confirms Hongmeng OS Is Not For Smartphones; Keep Using Android

Huawei's in-house Hongmeng OS was said to be an alternative of Android for the company's smartphones, however, the company apparently had its other plans.

Huawei’s own operating system Hongmeng OS was widely said to be the Android placement for its upcoming phones. It is known that the OS is created based on open-source Android. And in the latest final test, the OS was found to be about 60% faster than Android OS. However, this Chinese tech giant apparently had its other plans. According to the company’s VP and Board Member, Catherine Chen, the Hongmeng OS was not planned to be an alternative for Android. Instead, the OS has been developed for IoT and business uses.

The information was shared by Chen at a Brussels-based media roundtable. It is known that Huawei has already trademarked the OS, but it is reportedly aimed for industrial use and has been developed for a long time before the discussions around the company's Android replacement, following the US-China escalating trade war.

The upcoming Hongmeng OS is said to include fewer code lines in comparison with a mobile operating system. In addition, Huawei’s own OS has greatly lower latency compared with the OS for smartphones, added Chen.

Previously, during an interview, the company's Founder and CEO had stated that the Hongmeng OS will be taken advantaged in various ranges of products, comprising of network switches, tablets, routers, data centers, and computers.

Though this probably comes true, it’s worth noting that the officials of China government began speaking about the Huawei’s new OS once the U.S government made up their mind to ease the ban on Huawei, which leaves a presumption that there could have been considerations about turning it into a smartphone system after all.

Besides, Huawei has just trademarked another in-house operating system called Harmony OS as well. It is probably the commercial name of the Hongmeng OS or the moniker of its Android replacement. Anyway, it is hoped that Huawei would shed more light on it in its Annual Developers Conference taking place next month. Also, Huawei is tipped to introduce its new EMUI 10 for the Android OS in the conference.
