It is very close to the end of 2019 and it is rewind time. Let’s look at the most popular smartphone trends of 2019. Many smartphones launched this year featured a high screen-to-body ratio, at least a triple to quad-camera setup, a high refresh rate screen, fast charging technology, and more. OEMs have also tried to replace the notch with other designs, such as flip camera, punch-hole, pop-up selfie camera, and rotating camera. The USB-C port and under-display fingerprint sensor have also become much more popular in the industry. Not only flagships but many mid-range smartphones launched this year come with an in-display fingerprint reader.
Top 5 Most Popular Trends In Smartphone Industry In 2019
Quad rear cameras
The quad rear camera setup has become more popular in 2019. Even a budget smartphone like the Redmi Note 8 with a starting price of Rs. 9,999 also has one. While the setup varies in different smartphones, most of the setup includes a main sensor, a macro camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a depth sensor.
64MP and 48MP cameras
Starting with the 48MP sensors developed by Samsung and Sony, many companies tried to pack the highest-resolution sensor possible on its smartphones. Those companies like OnePlus, Realme, Xiaomi, and many others have used it quite extensively. This trend took the spotlight in the early half of the year, while the latter half of the year has seen plenty of smartphones with the Samsung GW1 64MP sensor. The first phone with the sensor is the Realme XT, followed by Galaxy A70s, Realme X2, Realme X2 Pro, Redmi Note 8 Pro, and more. Next year, companies will switch to the 108MP and 144MP battle. For now, only the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, Mi Note 10, and Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha come with a 108MP sensor.
Dark Mode
Dark Mode is one of the most awaited features this year. It helps reduce battery usage of smartphones and easy on eyes in low-light conditions. The feature also enhances text, photos, and color adjustments for both day & night environments.
The Dark Mode feature comes included on the latest iOS 13 and Android 10. OEMs also added this feature on their custom UIs, including ColorOS 7 by Oppo, OneUI 2.0 by Samsung, and MIUI 11 by Xiaomi.
90Hz displays
High refresh rate display is also one of the major selling points of smartphones in 2019. This trend was mostly started by OnePlus with the OnePlus 7 lineup with a 90Hz display. Having a higher refresh rate display can improve user experience by offering better animations and smoother scrolling. For now, this technology is only available in premium smartphones, but there is one exception and that is the Redmi K3 launched recently. Even with a starting price of only around Rs. 16,000, the Redmi K30 comes with a 120Hz display, which is even more impressive. Therefore, we should see more phones with a higher refresh rate display next year.
Punch-hole displays
The punch-hole display, started by Samsung, was used on many smartphones launched this year. It is also expected to be featured on the upcoming OnePlus 8 lineup and several other phones slated to launch in the first half of 2020. Unlike pop-up selfie camera and water-drop notched display, the punch-hole screen only has a small or pill-shaped cut-out on top to house one or two selfies shooter.
So these are the top 5 trends in the smartphone industry. Many of them will most likely be used in 2020 phones or at least ones that are expected to launch in the first half of 2020.
