The Snapdragon 865 Plus SoC is an upgraded version of the Snapdragon 865 chipset, which Qualcomm has yet to launch officially.

According to a report in China, ASUS is preparing to launch the third generation of its ROG Phone gaming smartphone sometime in Q3 2020. It is likely that the launch date will also be in July, similar to last year’s ROG Phone II. However, due to concerns about the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus, it is also possible that the launch date will be delayed by a few months.

ASUS ROG Phone II

ASUS ROG Phone III will inherit many features of its predecessor ROG Phone II, but there will be a big difference and it is the chipset. Accordingly, ASUS ROG Phone III will be the first smartphone equipped with Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset, which is a not-yet-released upgraded version of the Snapdragon 865 chip.

Asus Rog Phone II was the first smartphone in the world to come with the Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC.

Last year, Qualcomm also launched the Snapdragon 855 Plus in July 2019. However, the difference between Snapdragon 855 Plus and Snapdragon 855 is only 4% of performance, and the CPU clock speed is increased from 2.84Ghz to 2.96GHz. So this year, fans are expecting a significant performance improvement on the Snapdragon 865 Plus.

ASUS ROG Phone III will have a 6.6-inch OLED screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz, 6,000 mAh battery. These specifications are quite similar to its predecessor ROG Phone II. However, apart from that, the upcoming ASUS ROG Phone III will support 5G technology.

The information about the design and price of ROG Phone III has not been disclosed. Since it is still a long way until its official launch, things might change and there could be another smartphone maker being ahead of ASUS and announcing their own Snapdragon 865 Plus-powered smartphones.
